Exactly, Mars was probably once a very temperate planet until its core stopped spinning (thus stopped its magnetic field). Once that happened the layers of the atmosphere were stripped away and all that is left is what we see today.

 

This will definitely happen eventually to Earth, it's just a long way into our future. In all honesty given some of the things that happen in the universe it is pretty terrifying to think that so many things had to go just right for life to exist here.

I would daresay that a supermassive black hole fits the bill better. Without that we have no galaxy or sun let alone Jupiter and Earth.
