As we approach district play portion of the season have we reached two horse race with in Class 6A? Do we not have anyone that wants to upset the establishment? So this week I have decided to place a Classified Ad to find a team that will take out the mighty duo in Jefferson County. Is there anyone that can knock off Male and Trinity besides themselves?

Here is a look at the Top 2 teams in 6A.

 

Male

Has already proven they can beat Trinity. They defeated the Rocks two weeks ago. They remain undefeated on the year and have done it with both offense and defense. Offensively they are averaging 51 points per game behind a passing attack that averages 273 yards. The running attack averages 149 yards per game. They are being led by QB Hayden Shelton who is 49 of 81 with 11 touchdowns. Defensively the Bulldogs are giving up just 5 points per game. They have held their opponents to 42 yards per game rushing and 54 yards per game passing. The Male defense has forced 9 turnovers as well through 5 games.

 

Trinity

Sits at 4-1 on the season with a pair of impressive wins over pair of Tennessee teams; Ensworth and Brentwood Academy. Trinity in four out of 5 games have been impressive. Offensively the Rocks are averaging 31 points per game behind a balanced attack of rushing 152 yards a game and a passing 143 yards per game. They seem to be the most balance statistically. On the defensive side of the ball they have been giving up an average of 13 points per game. The defense has done a good job of holding opponents to an average of 78 yards of the ground. They have given up an average of 127 yards per game through the air.

 

I have taken a classified add to find a quality football team.

Wanted a 6A football team with a strong angry defense that is willing to deliver pain and hold opponents out of the end - zone. You must also possess a strong special teams that can place opposing teams in difficult field position. Able to kick field goals outside the normal extra point try. Last but not least must have an offense that is explosive. Must have the ability to deliver an assault through the air. You must also have a solid ground attack that can run around, over, and through the opponent’s defense.

 

The following teams have applied now it’s our time to really examine who is qualified. Lets take a statistical look at the top candidates of Class 6A.

 

1. Scott County

This year’s version of the Scott County Cardinals have proven that have the ground troops to cause some damage. They are averaging 382 yards per game through 5 games. They are doing this with a pair of running backs Keith Guy who has rushed for 652 yards and Noah Hughes who has 518 yards on the season. They are only averaging 89 yards a game through the air. Is that because they have such a strong ground game or is it because the lack the passing game. They have only attempted 41 passes in 5 games. Defensively the Cardinals have allowed 158 yards on the ground per game and given up 212 through the air. They are allowing an average of 29 points per game, the average victory margin is 18 points. Scott County is 4-1 with their only loss coming from Cincinnati Elder. Scott County’s biggest win was over Lafayette.

 

Do they have a good enough offense to compete?

 

2. Simon Kenton

The Pioneers have rolled to a 5-0 record on the season and they too are doing with a strong ground attack. Led by Dillion Powell who has rushed for 813 yards on the year. As a team they are rushing for 310 yards per game. They have displayed that QB Cameron Racke can do it both on the ground and in the air. Racke is 56 of 90 for 687 yards, that’s 137 yards per game. He is also averaging 71 yards a game running the football. Defensively they have held their opponents to 84 yards rushing a game and 187 in the air. The defense also has forced 12 turnovers this season. They have done this against other 6A schools with wins over Cooper and Bryan Station. The also defeated St. Xavier in scrimmage this preseason.

 

I think Simon Kenton has what it takes to take down the elite of Jefferson County.

 

3. Saint Xavier

St. Xavier this season has been the one man show behind Desmond Ridder. Ridder has thrown 331 yards and is 27 of 52. He has rushed for 372 yards. He has accounted for 50% of the Tigers offense. Offensively the Tigers are averaging 34 points per game. On Defense the Tigers have been stout against the run only giving up an average of 95 yards a game. They seem to have a weakness in the secondary as they have given up an average of 206 yards per game. Good news they only have given up an average of 17 pints per game. St. Xavier’s biggest win was over 5A power Bowling Green. They have a date with both Male and Trinity this season so we will so find out. (St. Xavier stats through 3 weeks)

 

Can the one man show of Ridder be enough to stake claim in Jefferson County?

 

4. Manual

Manual may be the one team people have the most to question where the sit among 6A top tier teams. Based on the schedule seems a little soft compared to others. Manual biggest win was over 5A foe Fern Creek. Based on the numbers Manual has a strong defense. Holding opponents to 48 yards per game rushing and 54 yards passing per game. The defense is only giving 7 points per game. Offensively they have rushed for an average of 157 yards per game. They have average 99 yards per game through the air. They are scoring an average of 28 points per game.

 

Does Manual have enough fire power to compete with the big boys?

 

How about any others. Bryan Station, Ryle, or McCracken County?

If SK's defense can continue to produce like their offense, then they can definitely compete & make a nice playoff run.

Is there anyone that can knock off H and T besides themselves? I assume you are speaking about regular season. I think St X is the only one because they play both teams on the field. If the StX team that beat BG shows up, I think they have a punchers shot to beat one of the two. I'm not sure which one, but I'm playing the odds.

I agree with Purple, On paper no one matches up to those two top teams. Good thing games aren't played on paper! If Rudder plays well in X's matchup with T and Male they stand a chance of pulling potential upsets.

Dixie's last year team was very talented but however they did not platoon. I feel that played a big role in the T game.

Do you know who won state in 2005 after X beat T 48-16 and was leading 48-0 in the 4th during the regular season?

I don't see SK having a chance to hang with the Louisville schools after watching them play cooper. I haven't seen Ryle yet but if they can run and pass the ball it's going to along night for SK. Everyone says Cooper is basically a 5a school with no depth. Well Cooper held their stud back to 60 yards but didn't have enough playmakers to stop the pass or the designed QB runs. I think Ryle beats SK and neither score in the 6a title game if they make it.

Drew Moore had one of the best arms in NKY last year, it just wasn't needed in the majority of the games. He still threw for over 1100 yards last year. Racke for SK half way through the season only has 687 yards passing right now. At this point of the season last year Drew Moore had around 450 yds passing. For Racke and a team that "Can and does throw the ball" in SK, only having 200 more yards passing on a lot more attempts at this point doesn't tell me Dixie couldn't throw the ball.

SK has a chance, but it will take a near perfect game (and some help in the form of turnovers) to beat the likes of Male or T. I think the Dixie team last year was better than this year's SK (although not as deep), but T overpowered them with talent, numbers, and ZERO mistakes.

Is Scott co offense good enough?? They are avg over 400 yds a game. I think they are doin pretty good. Since they have won against last year 4a an 5a state champs who were predicted to repeat earlier in the year. An did it by a large margin.then there o put 65 on the generals. Just curious, that 1100 yards passing for the year last year was that for just the regular season or the entire season? I ask because 73 yards passing per game doesn't exactly aid your argument. Dixie was very good last year because they were great up front and had 2 very dangerous players carrying the ball. You can say it all you want but they were not a capable passing team.
