Didn't people on here say the same thing about Highlands last year?

 

Highlands played Elder last year and a VERY good team from Florida (Christopher Columbus). The schedule this year is all KY teams for the first time in quite some time. I honestly think the HHS coaches did not want to play some of the out of state powers this year due to what they thought they had coming back this year...I could be wrong but that is what it looks like. Anyway, this is a CovCath thread - sorry to hijack it with HHS talk...

Depends on if you think 2011 is recent. Check the Elder Highlands scores and see if they've had tight games. 2013 is a controversial call at the end from a Highlands win. All the games have been tight games. Many Highlands fans felt going into this year that this may not be a team thats at the level of the previous 8. Ryle did step up for years and play Highlands even 2x a year for awhile. Ryle abruptly dropped the series and left Highlands scrambling for a date a few years ago. You'd have to ask Ryle why. Im sure everyone in Ft. Thomas preferred a game in Ft. Thomas or Union over driving to places like Paducah.

 

Highlands has beaten Elder twice in the past 10+ years. A loss is still a loss. Highlands generally gets beaten by 3 touchdowns vs big Ohio teams. Highlands is typically the best team to put up a fight and accassionally win against big time Ohio teams. But generally speaking, NKY is no match for them.

Just so you know. This group of seniors at Ryle have begged for Highlands to be back on the schedule since they were freshmen. Coaches or admin makes those decisions. We are glad to renew those games. They also have a goal of playing Trinity. All made back then. They want to compete and have been working hatd to do so. I don't think the traditions of royalty are scaring them. Win or lose they want to play. They have a statement to make of their own. They may not win a championship but they have the heart of one.

I'm worried about the culture of the school.

The Ryle kids never were shy about playing highlands. Why the games stopped I'm not sure. I know the kids asked to get highlands back on the schedule. They set goals as frosh by their senior year, beat Highlands, beat Trinity. Like I said win or lose they want to compete against the best. Not beat teams they are suppose to. They had to work at it , it took effort. Now they have a solid team. Wish HHS wasn't going through a tough year because they wanted HHS at their best. The kids are glad to renew the series. That's it.

The desire and motivation seems to be sub par. .

So you didn't notice a change in attitude from the Ryle game to the St X and sycamore game? I'm not talking about the obvious mismatch in talent, but the teams overall effort.

 

And please make no mistake about it. I wasn't making any reference about when I played. Regardless, I wouldnt beat around the bush. The football program was in a much better position back then. That matters nothing right now. But really good thought though.

I really don't think lopsided wins are the reason the series stopped. I'm sure there are more details than Ryle running scared excuse you offer. After all if that were the truth why would we schedule Colerain, Sycamore, Scott county? Those teams are better and those losses were just as lopsided. I know they were more of a physical games than the HHS games.

The question from MTGL was re: Cov Cath, not Ryle. He actually specifically said he would "...like to hear less about Highlands and Ryle."

Let's be fair. When you win like HHS has you are not the "self-proclaimed" king. You ARE the king.

I was intentionally vague because I think the "culture" encompasses so many facets.

Coaching transition, parent involvement, years of domination by a rival, where players are drawn from, the focus on basketball, new facilities, strength of schedule, the rumor of players quiting at half time during the beechwood game, coaching turn over, player expectation and attitude, etc all positively or negatively impact the success of the program. I'm just saying the positive aspect need to be retained and the negatives weeded out.

Last post on this subject from me. I didn't say the lopsided score was the reason why Ryle pulled the plug on the series. It was the fact Highlands was still running fly routes with the game in hand in the 4th quarter.

Where players are drawn from?

With the emergence of strong programs in Boone county, does Cov Cath get as many BC players as they used to? I was told they do not.
