Police investigating Scott High School missing booster funds

Featured Replies

My guess, in this situation, is you had a completely overwhelmed small group of dedicated, hard working good people who just simply were trying to do to much with too few people helping out. Same story is happening all over Northern Kentucky. It sucks.

I bet what happened here is there weren't any processes or checks put in place by the board to ensure this didn't happen. Not because of laziness or stupidity...just good people trying to good things and not having enough help. Sadly, one bad apple enters the scene and - BOOM - disaster occurs.

It's shockingly sad how few people are willing and able to volunteer/sacrifice their time to help community organizations anymore. I've coached in a youth football organization for six years now and it's shameful the complete lack of giving a d**n by so many people when it comes to dedicating time to these very important organizations.

End result, even fewer people - when they see this garbage - are going to want to get involved at all. Scares me to think of what the future holds for a lot of organizations in this area.

You would think after another local school had an issue a few years ago that every booster organization would put methods in place to help minimize the risk. You can't have one person have sole responsibility with no checks and balances.

I've worked the gate at SK for a number of athletic events and there are always two people working the gate and each has to take an indepentent count and agree on how much was there. I do believe these policies became more rigid about 3 years ago. It surprises me that Scott does not have similiar policies and practices in place.

I remember working the gate once for the Spartans and there was a good amount of cash involved. I told one of the nice ladies that ran things you ain't going anywhere and we are walking together with this cash after we each count it and individually verify and agree how much cash is here.

Be smart people. Count it, document it, have an independent witness.

Any time there is money that is not properly accounted for, trust me someone will figure out a way to get their hands on it.

I have seen a lot of things that didn't pass the smell test, that I had no proof of over the years. Including new vehicles for some people involved with the cash handling of away from school fund raising.

Gate and concession money are two different things. Gate recaps back to tickets. Concessions recaps back to ??????

This has happened to 3 school districts within a 30 minute drive of my house in the last 5 years.

Some of the thieves have been school employees. (thats sad)

You can add all the checks an balances you want, but theives will find the weak link and continue to steal.

it is my understanding that the eagle club is the main boosters club, but that each sport has their own boosters club that does fundraising and runs their own agenda. They need to have one club to straighten this out instead of having several different organizations running their own books.

The Eagle Club is not strictly a sports booster club. It is kind of a combination sports/PTO club. From the Scott High School website:

The Eagle Club is designed to give financial help to the school and athletic teams. Some of the items that the Eagle Club helps to finance are all the academic awards that are given on Awards night in May, the Eagle Cash program, Scholarships (3 @ $1000), receptions such as the meal provided before parent-teacher night and elects the SBDM parent representatives each year. They help finance athletics by paying half of a teams’ cost to purchase new uniforms every so many years, awards to district, regional, and state champions. The Eagle Club pays for the letters, bars, and pins for both athletics and academics. In addition, the club accepts special requests. A few years ago, the Eagle Club helped the band finance new chairs for the band room and recently, the drama club made a request for help with some items for the spring production. The majority of the money used to fund these requests is generated from the concession stands at our home games. Yearly the Club spends approximately $20,000 to support Scott High School activities

Really, it's not unusual for each team to have a separate booster organization that solely provides support and assistance for that particular team. Having one master booster club would not have fixed or prevented this issue from occurring, and in fact would have had a greater effect on the individual teams. As it stands, this issue, while awful, will have little, if any day to day effect on individual sports teams that do in fact have their own booster club (not all sports teams at Scott have a booster club....I'm only aware of a couple teams that do have a separate booster club, and those teams aren't affected by this) Hopefully, despite the theft/misappropriated funds, The Eagle Club will still be able to provide and pay for letters, bars, academic awards, etc.

As a general rule, never trust anyone with cash. It's the old 5% rule. It's a shame that some people will steal but we should assume everyone would steal and put precautions in place to prevent the temptation.

Glad they caught someone, I do however feel bad for her kids if they are involved in athletics.

Kids don't deserve this. Hopefully this is handled professionally.

Like I said earlier, this happens everywhere at all levels.

I am glad to hear it. I hope they make an example out of Tucker.

Also hate it for her kids but a strong example needs to be set.
