I'm surprised that the folks on the news aren't questioning the parents on this one. The more I think I about it, the more it aggravates me. Some of the comments in the article are baffling.

Like this:

"They know the waters. They've been through rough water, they've been through thin water. ... Those are salty dog kids, and they know what they're doing out there," said Nick Korniloff, Perry's stepfather.

I will keep a light in the lighthouse on for them. I agree, it is foolish to let anyone but an experienced sailor (and how experienced can one be at 14?) take a boat out on the open sea. This was only a 19ft. boat, and that is nothing when out in the ocean.

I have sailed a 37ft. Catalina sailboat on the open sea, and it is a sobering and awe-inspiring task, and I had training for it, and had the benefit of a more experienced sailor on deck. A 37ft. sailboat also has a 3 ton keel that keeps it from overturning. A motorized boat does not have this counterweight (to the sail), thus in high seas is at higher risk for capsizing. I wouldn't recommend it and parents that allowed this were stupid.

77 mile trip to Bahamas as well?

I don't get purpose of Joe Nammath in national interview.

God bless these boys & their families.

I used to go out with my Dad and Uncle in the Delaware Bay in a slightly larger boat (21 ft). Things got rough once, and it was a frightening experience, and the bay is much calmer than the ocean. No way I'd have been able to get home safe at the age of 14 under tough conditions.

Based on what the article said, they weren't supposed to be out on the ocean. They were supposed to within stay in the intercoastal.

Further proving that you can't trust the judgment of a 14-year old. They shouldn't be alone on a boat...period.
