Wireman
This is an incredibly sad story and I pray these two kids are found alive. Families keep up hope about Florida teens missing at sea - CNN.com That being said, there's no scenario where two 14-year old boys should be operating a boat, especially offshore. Should the parents face charges here? Am I overreacting or is this crazy?
UKMustangFan
I think charges could potentially be warranted.
hidinout
No you are not over reacting . Parents are nothing but fools . Soon to be heart broken fools . Very sad but you dont turn 14 year old boys loose at sea .
75center
Even though both have grown up around the sea I don't see any scenario where I would let them go out fishing without an adult.
UKMustangFan
Hell, you're not allowed at a city pool without adult supervision, but somehow these parents thought it was wise to allow their 14 year old kids out in the ocean alone? Idiots.
Wireman
I'm surprised that the folks on the news aren't questioning the parents on this one. The more I think I about it, the more it aggravates me. Some of the comments in the article are baffling. Like this: "They know the waters. They've been through rough water, they've been through thin water. ... Those are salty dog kids, and they know what they're doing out there," said Nick Korniloff, Perry's stepfather. doomer
I will keep a light in the lighthouse on for them. I agree, it is foolish to let anyone but an experienced sailor (and how experienced can one be at 14?) take a boat out on the open sea. This was only a 19ft. boat, and that is nothing when out in the ocean.
doomer
I have sailed a 37ft. Catalina sailboat on the open sea, and it is a sobering and awe-inspiring task, and I had training for it, and had the benefit of a more experienced sailor on deck. A 37ft. sailboat also has a 3 ton keel that keeps it from overturning. A motorized boat does not have this counterweight (to the sail), thus in high seas is at higher risk for capsizing. I wouldn't recommend it and parents that allowed this were stupid.
Wireman
I've been on a 28-foot boat on rough seas and it takes about 30 seconds to realize that Mother Ocean is in control at all times.

God bless these boys & their families.
rjs4470
I used to go out with my Dad and Uncle in the Delaware Bay in a slightly larger boat (21 ft). Things got rough once, and it was a frightening experience, and the bay is much calmer than the ocean. No way I'd have been able to get home safe at the age of 14 under tough conditions. lawildcat
Good Lord. The ineptitude of some parents continues to amaze me. Prayers to these 2 young boys.
Lawnboy13
77 mile trip to Bahamas as well? ....just plain STUPID!!!!! Hell, I won't even let DLG 2.0 drive to the end of our street, and these "brain surgeons" let two 14 yr. olds head to the Bahamas.
coldweatherfan
Based on what the article said, they weren't supposed to be out on the ocean. They were supposed to within stay in the intercoastal.

Further proving that you can't trust the judgment of a 14-year old. They shouldn't be alone on a boat...period.
