July 30, 201511 yr I hadn't seen this image until today. Everything I've read made it sound like they were 67 miles out to sea on their way to the Bahamas. From the looks of this, their boat was found right near the shoreline.
July 30, 201511 yr The boat's location was probably determined more by the currents after it capsized rather than where the boys had actually piloted it. Not that I have every turned over my sailboat in the ocean...ok maybe a time or two...but you learn pretty quickly to hang onto it and get it back upright ASAP because it will drift with the current very quickly. In 24 hours, a boat can easily drift over 60 miles. The gulf stream near the surface is almost 6 mph.

It's just odd to me that all of the reports I read made it seem like the boat was way out at sea. That image shows 67 miles north of Ponce de Leon not 67 miles east.

July 30, 201511 yr It's been roughly a week right? Sorry, they need to stop wasting resources. They're either dead, or if they're alive, they don't want to be found.

August 4, 201511 yr The salvage boat that went out to fetch the boys' boat could not find it. It may have sunk but they are no longer looking for it. The Coast Guard ended the search. The family has hired private group to continue to search.
August 4, 201511 yr Author I've thought about this all week. What a terrible way to die. Kids sometimes make dumb decisions. That's why I would never give my 14-year olds the keys to the boat. But that's just me and I'm not going to hammer these parents for their choices. They've definitely been punished enough already.
August 4, 201511 yr This is just so incredibly sad no matter what the circumstances of them being out there. Prayers for these 2 children and their family/friends. Heartbreaking.
August 5, 201511 yr I noticed a couple of days ago there is a Gofundme account to help continue the search, over 500k was raised when I saw the article, and it was only up for a day or two at that time.
