July 22, 201511 yr After watching the video, two things come to mind. 1. This cop seems to have a little bit of an attitude and quite the hair trigger. This didn't have to go this way and he definitely helped steer it down this path. 2. Bland didn't do herself any favors and helped to escalate the situation with a very bad attitude that became downright belligerent. It just amazes me people get this way with police officers and how they just keep digging the hole deeper. Thought the cop was pretty level headed at first. When she gave him the business he got all fired up in a hurry. I'm wondering if she blew a little smoke in his face?

I was estimating based on how quickly I came up on him. I was probably going 5 or so over the speed limit, then accelerated around him. Again, he didn't make the decision for me to speed. I'll own it.
July 22, 201511 yr Obviously sides are being taken over this issue. One common thing I've read is the officer was overzealous in stopping her in the first place. Speculation is that the reason she changed lanes in the first place was to get out of the oncoming officer's way. The video shows the officer doing a U-turn when she passed him. Has the officer said in his report what caused him to follow her? All can be true but no matter what the reason for the stop was still gives no reason for the subject to refuse to do what the officer is asking etc. You think you are wrongfully stopped, then do as asked and take up the fight in court. Simple as that. When you get mouthy and refuse to do what is asked by a police officer then you are putting your own well being at risk both mentally and physically.

Questions I'd ask if I were the officer's supervisor: 1. What made you turn around to follow her? 2. Why did you poke the bear? He walked up to the car with her warning and instead of just giving her the warning and sending her on her way he said something like "you seem bothered." No kidding. She THEN explained clearly why she seemed bothered. She got over to get out of his way and then she gets a ticket/warning. Yes, she was bothered. Now he could have simply sent her on her way but , once again, he decided to prolong it. Why? She's not happy. Nothing good can come from whatever else he says to her. 3. Why did he tell her to put out the cigarette? Could have been a good reason but I'd have to ask him that. 4. Why did he immediately go to telling her to get out of the car when she declined to put out the cigarette? 5. Why when asked did he not tell her why she was being arrested? He has to know this is on video and MAY come up. It's a new world for officers. Cameras are everywhere. You can't do things like you used to. The officer is not without blame.

Agree...they guy, at least in this particular incident was not professional/smart/tactful enough to understand the situation, smile, hand her the ticket and be done. She was upset and it appears a bit of a malcontent, and he did noting but agitate her and progress the situation from a simmer to a boil. If this guy was a hostage negotiator, he'd have every last one of the hostages killed in the first 5 minutes.

July 22, 201511 yr Not shocking to me at all. She came away as being crazy from watching her explode on the video. All the more reason the jail should have taken a few more preventative measures. All indications from news reports are that she was not actively suicidal and it would not appear the jail was concerned as she was in a standard 4 person, albeit alone. The isolation was probably for her own benefit I would guess, a courtesy, rather than putting her in general. Having said that: during intake when she offered she had considered or attempted suicide, I may have watched a little more closely. I will say this: every jail in America could do with more mental health training and support. The majority of inmates are prone to mental health issues and the conditions in jail lend themselves to those conditions being exacerbated. Many jail administrators do not believe inmate claims of MH issues in addition to being poorly trained. We could do much better as a society by addressing these issues and helping jailers understand that it's not always about forced compliance Edited July 23, 201511 yr by True blue (and gold)
July 22, 201511 yr So this lady just accepted a job at her alma matar at a college, so obviously she isn't dumb. So why did she just co operate with the cop. Maybe she was trying to bully him since she assumed that since she is black a all the stuff that has happened that he would back down. Then she goes and kills herself and the cop is blamed, she could have had a ticket or warning if she didn't act stupid. She had no excuse for what she did to herself, I may not know what went through her mind, but I do know I ain't killing myself over a ticket. Edited July 23, 201511 yr by mountain ref
