I think that one of the underlying parts that makes Christians really cringe with same-sex marriage and homosexuality in general are those who have really read the Bible and studied it. It is a sin that brings judgement and the Bible clearly states it in several places that its an abomination to God. Sin is sin, but if you read closely and study what the Bible really says and its examples this is a Sin that will bring harsh judgement and has according to the Bible. Those judgements will affect the Christians as well as the sinners if God so judges a whole country based on the sins of many. Now I know this is really a old school concept but to those of you that have studied the Bible and its warnings I think this will make some sense as to why alot of Christians really get worked up about this. The Bible if you believe it states clearly that God does not Change. Just saying I feel this is alot of the underlying hard stance some take who interpret the Bible literally.

The Bible says in the last days it will be like in the days of Noah, that basically everything will be going along just like nothing is wrong. "37“When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day.38In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat.39People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes." New Living Translation Mathew 24:37

Things are just cruising alone now at a pace if you will read the Bible it basically tells you what is going to happen. Seems pretty simple to this old foolish man.

Could the same be said of time in our country in which we were content with the slaughter of native "savages"?

Could the same be said of the time in our country in which we were content with living in a society in which it was okay to own other humans?

Could the same be said of a time in our country in which we detested and looked down at humans from other countries that didn't come here legally?

Could the same be said of a time in our country in which we judged poor people rather than helped them?

I think that whatever is our own personal sticking point, we will interpret that passage differently.

Just telling you what I think that is some of the cause for such the stir. Obviously my opinion don't matter or anyone's who does not agree with you and that's ok. Yours matters about as much to me as mine to you. So tolerant, I should have known better.

JMO, but I really feel many times people will use the Bible as a way to try and rationalize bigotry or ignorance on certain things. As for tolerance, nope, I have absolutely none for those who feel it's okay to discriminate against others. As I said, that's just my opinion and I'm sure most won't agree with me. It just seems any time anyone tries to justify some sort of discrimination they do so by using the Bible as a defense mechanism as to why. I simply don't think the Bible's purpose was to be used as a defense for discrimination. :idunno:

This is going to get me labeled as a nasty liberal, but I don't really care. Whether it be same sex marriage, the confederate flag, or race, I have seen the word tolerance being thrown around by the conservative viewpoint so often lately that it is driving me crazy.

You posted a point and it was interesting. TB&G posted a counterpoint, but she is all of a sudden not tolerant. Are you only fishing for an "Amen" or a few likes? What is the point of even having a discussion?

Jesse James, to be honest, I appreciated your original post. It answered a question I posed earlier in this thread, but now I honestly have no idea how to engage in a conversation with you on this topic.

Was that a response to me?

Yes, I was unsure how my post showed that I was intolerant. I honestly wanted a discussion.

This thread took a left about 12 exits ago. Back to the topic and issue.

I would just have the State issue the marriage licenses if the clerks will not follow the law. I think it would be better to keep track of all the people who have more than one husband/wife anyway.

My post was only intended to give what I thought was a reason for what I feel like is a reason for a lot of Christians to oppose this law. Judgement from Above. I thought I clearly said this was a sin that God looks at in a somewhat different light as some of the others which separates this from other sin to a degree that I hear from the poeple who do not oppose gay marriage or homosexuality. I never would make any difference in any human no matter what their sexual orientation was. I have gay friends who will vouch for that, but they understand my position and why I feel that way.

I guess I took True Blue and gold wrong. For that I am sorry if I took this post wrong. Forgive me.

Let's say there is a unmarriaged female teacher at a Christain school who is pregnant. The school tells her that she has to quite or be fired. There are some people who will say that she knew the job description and the rules.

For those who agree with the above, don't the clerks have to live up to what is expected of them? Their job is to issue marriage licenses.

I will give my opinion on this. Now remember this is just how or why I think the "intolerant" word is being tossed around. For years the "side" opposite to the Christians claimed the Christians were intolerant to them because of what they were saying. Now the Christians come out and say publically what they believe loudly and suddenly the shoe is on the other foot. Its ok as long as you be quiet or agree with me........I am not looking for Amens nor likes. That's quite obvious by my posts and the replys to them. Just giving my opinion so maybe others can understand where some of the Christians are coming from, thats all.

This is my take on the intolerance thing, for what it's worth.

Many come down hard on those who are clearly engaging in discriminatory practices - whether they be serving pizza, providing wedding flowers, issuing marriage licences, renting apartments - whatever. Discrimination and intolerance are going hand in hand.

Many of us are hammering them. Many of us that are doing so are Christians who simply want to see a lot more of "do unto others" rather than "screw unto others".

This is probably just the flaming liberal in me, but I see the calling out of discrimination as "our intolerance of intolerance".

How is pointing out historical data intolerant? I think much of the prophets lay open the sins of injustice, avarice, corruption and idolatry as containing massive punishment as well.
