New Bill Filed to Exempt Clerks from issuing gay marriage licenses

Featured Replies

You said that marriage is intended to be until death separates the partners?

Yes, in reference to "let man not separate what God has joined together." You stay married until "death do you part" as the vow goes.

Do you have a different take?

In Genesis 4:19, and Deuteronomy 21:15-17 God blesses polygamous relationships.

"One man and one woman" is not a locked in stone or ironclad rule of God for all marriages, as scripture makes exceptions for such things as polygamy and divorce because of fornication.

I disagree strongly. God did not bless polygamy. First, Lamech is not a person who is commended in the Bible. He has the same violent traits as his forefather Cain and he has already depart from the Biblical pattern of one man with one wife. Secondly, the Law at Dt. 21 regulated a practice that was common throughout the Ancient Near East in an effort to minimize some of its bad consequences. The Bible's mention of polygamy is descriptive not prescriptive.

I explained how the Bible does not condone polygamy in the thread on Slavery and the Bible.

Regarding divorce, there are a few exceptions to the rule but Jesus clearly teaches that divorce is not God's intention but is the result of sin. Perhaps the sin is of only one partner, like some cases of adultery and then the innocent party is not to be blamed.

Good post.

Still I do take note that Jacob had two wives and David many. Abraham had only one but committed what I guess was technically adultery with Hagar.

I think stable family structure is very important but I am not certain our society has always been on board with it in action.

NO!!

So, God did leave room for such things as divorce, and Yes, also polygamy.

Samuel 12:7-8.

"And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things."

All these discussions have me really contemplative lately. Where does Jesus command me (trying to stay away from the "us" scenario) to stop someone from sinning? I get there may be religious objections. But really, those can be compromised in many, many ways. If I believe divorce is a sin, and my BFF is getting a divorce, what is my responsibility? If I believe adultery is a sin and my BFF is skulking around behind her husband's back, what is my responsibility? Then I have another conundrum. In so many other discussions I read that the group cannot be held accountable for the actions of the individual, and this is used to distance one from the reprehensible actions of those who seem to share the same beliefs. How does the latter reconcile with the former?

Way too much going on in my head the days. :lol2:

You cannot stop anyone from sinning. Thats their free will. You dont have to agree with it or condone it and all you can do is pray hard for them and IF they do not know its a sin, (providing they believe the Bible and what Jesus says,) you can tell them its a sin( which alot do not like, however if they know you are really their friend they will listen, maybe not stop but will listen) Each person knows what their convictions are as a Christian, some here that are Christians say the Clerks should issue the licenses and some feel they should not. That is to each his own responsibilty to take this up with God and what they feel is right.

2 Timothy 2:15 "Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth" New Living Translation.

Mark 16:15 "The Great Commission from Jesus : 14Afterward He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16"He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.…"

Its our job as Christians to let the world know what Jesus taught. We are his disciples that are here on earth now to spread the good news that he died on the cross for everyones sins. Some accept that as truth, others like to take part of it, while some say its a fairly tale. Thats everyones God given right to make the decision that they can live with and hopefully die with.

Rockmom its always been a good thing for me when my little brain really starts working hard pondering. Usually I figure out I was wrong, lol.

Well, I am about to go out of the country for three weeks (had to schedule something to get out of the meet-n-greet next weekend, lol, j/k). So, I will stay out of any thread that I may respond with more than a few short sentences.

But I will say this before I leave. No ones beliefs should interfere with the rights of other people. The clerks always had to issue marriage licenses, now same sex marriages are included, it's still their job, they either need to do it or, quite, or get fired! I do not agree that it's wrong, and I do not agree that someone issuing a same sex marriage license is doing anything wrong, but if they feel they cannot do it, then okay, I commend those who have resigned, I don't agree with why they resigned, but that is their right to resign, and as with anyone else, I hope that they find peace in retirement or another job. One thing we are supposed to do is feel good for others when they are feeling good, and we are supposed to feel their pain when they feel pain.

Jesus also said "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given", and "The one who can accept this should accept it". To whom Paul was taking to, as well as when and why comes into play, when he was talking about relationships within the Biblical moral frame work, committed, faithful, noncultic.

I also hope when I come back that I find this discussion in the religious forum ;)

^ religious forum?! Nah, it's too political. LOL

Shouldn't people focus on the sins that they commit on a daily basis, instead of causing such an uproar over the "sins" that they perceive others to be committing? Just a thought...
