It's people who keep talking about this is why it won't go away, just look at how many posts are in this thread in a very short period of time. I actually think that some are uncomfortable over this issue in some ways that they won't admit.

 

Question, the people who are bringing up Lauren Hill, Leah Still, how many of those people donated to Lauren Hill? Or who bought a Still jersey to help raise awareness? I am willing to say that many who are bringing up these other names as more deserving didn't even donate a nickel. You are always going to have people say that this person or that person deserves a reward over another person. That will never end.

 

My mom died of cancer, does she get an award? I follow several pages on Facebook of kids with cancer and administrator on some of them, do those kids get an award? Why do people mention Lauren Hill or anyone else? Why was their struggle worse than someone else's? Again, no matter who wins an award there are others out there who will say "why not (insert name here)?"

 

I could just as easily flip that around and ask why is Jenner's "courageousness" so much more courageous than a good friend of mine of several decades, who shocked us all a few months back by declaring that he was now identifying as a female?

 

My friend has nowhere near the monetary and other resources — as well as a groundswell of public support from those sympathetic to LGBT causes — that the Jenner/Kardashian family has to help him ease the path to transition, and now will also have severely limited job prospects as well for the remainder of his years.

Wonder how much old Bruce/Caitlyn made from Vanity Fair to bring his courageous awareness to the mixed up gender community?

That's my point, people can go on and on and on of who is more deserving. Is Jenner courageous, possibly. Is your friend of several decades ago deserving when he was in a time that was at least a bit less tolerant? Both courageous, I could say yes, who is more courageous, well that is a debate that will never end.

Yes, people are willing to do some strange thing for 15 minutes of fame and publicity. But still, I think this is a pretty harsh and difficult road for someone to choose simply for publicity....especially since the Jenner is already pretty much set for the rest of life (and probably even longer) and has had many years of living in the limelight. This has certainly been an option for any one else to try for quite awhile, and no one has exactly jumped on it. In fact, most prefer to hide it and do it well away from the spotlight.

 

If (s)he's not being a publicity hound why do the photo spread, why do the interviews, why the potential new reality show? Why not just do it quietly and privately.

 

As to his/her courage (s)he's now a member of a protected class that will have people that denigrate anyone that dares to question his/her motives. That doesn't take a whole lot of courage as far as I'm concerned.

 

In 2008 it was OK for a certain presidential candidate to say he opposed same sex marriage, just 7 short years later if you have the audacity to say anything negative about the LGBT community or any of it's members you're immediately labeled a hate monger.

Again, never said you were hateful or intolerant. What I did say was that I was fairly certain that wasn't the way you meant it. My point was when you start using words like shameful, and ridiculous, your message can be misinterpreted. You can bet there are more than a few people that are perfectly fine with Jenner winning this award. How do you think those folks would interpret the way you wrote that post?? How did you react to what I posted (I wasn't as clear as I could have been)??

 

The fact that this is so difficult to write about on a message board, also shows how polarizing and new this whole situation is. It's tough to write about and clearly state ideas. And easy to misinterpret. That should show how difficult it must be for Jenner.

I think what you mention here is the tough part. If he didn't do something publicly or use his celebrity to help raise awareness, or advance the public perception, he stands the chance of alienating the people that do support him most...the transgender community. I can almost guarantee you'd hear "he could have done so much more". Like it or not this is a current issue. And just by reading posts on this thread, it's easy to see the not everyone is so accepting of or completely understand the whole idea of transgender. The fact that this may bother some so much to here about or question his motives, should clarify the fact that we have a long way to go in regards to this issue.

Beat them to the punch and hope to be left alone after that. That's why you see Brangelina always sell their kids' pictures at birth and give the money to one of their charities.

Well, not everyone donates their money and I don't expect Jenner to do so; I was just giving an example of why the interview might have been done. Just speculation on my part.

Who cares?? Does it matter? Jenner has now publicly stated she identifies as a female. Why not respect her wishes??

My grandmother still calls me Ricky, and I haven't gone by that name for 30 years. Some habits are tough to break.

 

I slipped a few times in this thread, and typed "he" before I caught myself and corrected it. That's going to happen. But I see no reason for one to go out of one's way to point out the obvious by either emphasizing the "he" or by using the now common (s)he when referencing Jenner.
