Rand Paul: 'I will force the expiration' of the PATRIOT Act

Featured Replies

Rand Paul plans to force the expiration of the PATRIOT Act Sunday by refusing to allow Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to expedite debate on a key surveillance bill.

In a statement to POLITICO Saturday, Paul warned that he would not consent to any efforts to pass either an extension of current law or the USA Freedom Act, a reform bill passed overwhelmingly by the House earlier this month.

Cause for celebration.

I find Rand Paul to be the most confounding politician perhaps in my lifetime. And I'm totally supportive of his efforts here.

Every year for as long I can remember, Kentuckians vote for Mitch McConnell. Every year for as long as I can remember, Kentuckians wonder why they voted for him. Why does he always win? Lack of options?

The KDP rarely runs a credible candidate. Nobody wants to go against the McConnell smear machine. It's amazing Bevin has survived it.

I support Paul in this effort .

I agree, cause to celebrate!

Looking forward to meeting Dr. Paul for the second time tomorrow at the Bell Tower in Newport at 12 at his book signing.

Man, I'm sorry to tell you, but that was today.

Tomorrow, he'll be at the Senate, making sure this thing gets its stamp of expiration.

Disagree with his efforts entirely.

The Patriot Act has help keep us safe for the last 14 years. Once again, ideology trumps common sense in politics.

I hope he is successful. WAY too many liberties have been surrendered with this piece of legislation. If Big Brother and its concomitant slippery slope are for you, then you will not support the Senator's efforts. From Senator Paul:

I object to the warrantless searches being performed on United States citizens. I object to the 200,000 NSL searches that have been performed without a judge’s warrant.

- I object to over 2 million searches of bank records, called Suspicious Activity Reports, performed on U.S. citizens without a judge’s warrant.

Civil Freedoms ? What?s wrong with the PATRIOT ACT?

This is one where I clearly see both sides of the argument. If I had to vote, I wouldn't know how to decide.

From the link Mcpapa posted...

“[T]here is no doubt that if we lived in a police state, it would be easier to catch terrorists. If we lived in a country that allowed the police to search your home at any time for any reason; if we lived in a country that allowed the government to open your mail, eavesdrop on your phone conversations, or intercept your email communications; if we lived in a country that allowed the government to hold people in jail indefinitely based on what they write or think, or based on mere suspicion that they are up to no good, then the government would no doubt discover and arrest more terrorists. But that probably would not be a country in which we would want to live. And that would not be a country for which we could, in good conscience, ask our young people to fight and die. In short, that would not be America.”

Disagree with his efforts entirely.

"Common sense in politics" has to mean stripping away the freedoms of the American people and turning us into a society where the NSA is for all intents and purposes the KGB? Sorry, but there's gotta be a better way than sacrificing what it means to be an American.

I think the original intention of the Patriot Act was good at the time. Rooting out terrorists among our citizenry, but I’m wondering if the Government is taking advantage of it and overstepping it’s boundaries. At first I thought, “I have nothing to hide, I’m not a terrorist.” However, if we don’t reign in some of the abuses done under this legislation, we are letting the terrorists win by giving them the power to restrain our freedoms.

We can't let fear run our laws. That is what the Patriot Act is. I belive most the people who created this law had good intentions , just like Obama did with Obama care. But good intentions doesn't equal protecting freedom .

Rand Paul 2016

I'm with Mr. Paul on this one.
