My man best get his facts straight before he goes spouting off. Any financial aid given at catholic schools is need based aid, it has ZERO to do with athletics......but if the coach wants to continue to believe that, it's his choice.

According to the NCC website, scholarships are available for merit, need, and other criteria.

Some scholarships are are given out based on the high school placement test, but it doesn't say the highest score on the test gets the scholarship.

In my dealings with Western KY teams, they hate traveling and spending money in general for that stuff. Sounds like a grip to grip to me.

If the reason they are quitting is private schools, fire them and anyone who supports them. I don't care what their record is. They are uninformed whiners and quitters and I don't want them coaching any child of mine.

 

Most schools in KY have no boundaries when it comes to students. Students are free to go to any school they choose as long as the school allows it. Tuition and cost to go to one of those public schools is less than a private school.

 

Finally, someone please correct me on this but, doesn't the KHSAA strictly watch use of "scholarships" with athletes? I am not saying there are no players getting financial aid to attend a private school, but it is minimal and is part of an entire student body criteria. Private schools cannot give out scholarships for athletics.

I'll assume Coach Hodge is pulling his teams from all games since a few public schools allow kids from outside of their district to play.

What "Independent" schools give Scholarships?

What's the difference in public money funding schools or private money funding a school? There's more money available per student on the public side than the private side. If a parent chooses to place their child in an environment better suited for learning, then so be it. If you think it's about athletics then go read the other thread on here about your chances at the next level.

Unless the school has an approved merit-based scholarship program which existed prior to the KHSAA's adoption of Bylaw 11 (which I think applies only to one school in all of Kentucky), any student receiving more than 25% of tuition in the form of a merit-based scholarship is ineligible to participate in KHSAA-sanctioned athletics. I believe KHSAA has uniformly enforced that rule. A couple Louisville-area private schools have challenged that Bylaw; I don't know where that challenge stands.

 

Need-based financial aid is different. Per Bylaw 11 sec. 3, each school must report the financial aid given to each student-athlete and the "report of the approved independent agency." The reality is that student-athletes often qualify for need-based financial aid.

NewCath is very fortunate to have many generous alum who have graciously given back to the school in the form of setting up scholarships. There are NONE given out for athletics.

If I was a taxpayer in that area, and was sending my kids to a private school my comment to them would be, "Sorry you feel that way, my tax dollars are paying for your job, and yet my kids dont go to your district, I guess you dont value that free money your getting for not having to educate my kids."

Their kid not being there means they get less money....

Does the Khsaa say how much you can pay a student to do odd jobs to "work" off tuition? For example, does sweeping off the front porch of the school for 5 minutes a day constitute a $6000 a year job that covers tuition? I'm fairly confident jobs similar to that exist out there at certain schools.

Each athlete at private schools should simply have to show copies of their paid checks that were deposited into the schools accounts. Show the trail of money where you paid the tuition and that ends the controversy. That would prove theres minimal chance of wrongdoing. If theres accounting by both the schools and the students for all tuition, there wouldn't be any financial eligibility issues. I just feel the khsaa is fearful to really look that deeply into the financials of the athletes for fear of what they'd find.

 

For example school tuition is $10,000. Show my checks totaling $7800, the abc family scholarship for $1200, $500 entry score prize money, and my $500 for scrubbing the johns 3x in July.
