They were hoping for a lead. And when they got the lead jared Seibert would pitch the rest of the game. He pitched 4 innings giving up no hits while striking out 6 in 4 innings of relief

That may be the worst reason to save your best pitcher I've ever heard.

So if they get the lead, then they bring him in to finish the game? That seems like a high risk strategy, considering (A) you have to get the lead, and (B) his relief appearance would keep him from being eligible to pitch tonight in the championship. Why not just start him to begin with?

Who said he was only available for 4 innings? No one! You read what you wanted so you could agree with your tiger friend. Poor planning, you sure don't know Pat Ryan!

I'm sure you would have done it different. Second guessing coaches seems to be a hobby of yours, Football, Basketball and now Baseball you couldn't be a coach your way to smart.

And apparently you will follow Pat Ryan off the cliff with the lemmings. It seems to me that everyone else in this thread, including someone who says they have coached in the district for a number of years, is trying to figure it out.

Please tell us why you wouldn't put your best on the mound from the start in a one game season? I am open to a good reason, and "because Pat Ryan knows what he is doing" isn't a good explanation.

Having coached baseball for a long time and in this District/Region format, you would have to have one heck of a good reason why your ace was not on the hill in that game from inning one.

When it's a "one and done" format, you put your best available pitcher on the hump & all other arms are available in relief. You figure out who starts game #2 when you get there, especially if it's the district finals where you're guaranteed at least one more game.

Just going from what I have heard. Another reason like somebody stated above is the defense drops off drastically when he is not at short.

the championship doesn't matter. All that matters is getting to the regional tournament. And pat Ryan decided this would give them the best shot

Just an outsider looking in......but if I'm not correct, CCH scored all their runs against the "best defense"and didn't score any when the defense was "deminished." Sounds as if the best defense is having your ace on the mound....

Defense doesn't help when you walk 5 in 1 inning

If you were at the game you would know that the first inning Seibert vacated SS and made his way to the mound, a routine groundball found it's way right through the new SS's legs and into LF.

Was only there for about 15 minutes or so......So the new ss had no warm ups at the SS position before the game and perhaps wasn't comfortable with the field? Was it just one of those hops? A blotched play? Were the runs scored part of the 5 walks that I read earlier in the post? If so, then eliminating the 5 walks with starting the ace on the mound would have meant the E by the SS would have just meant 1 base?

again....a lot of what if's, but you have to go with your best......A pitcher has part in every play when your team is in the field, vs a SS that is just part when the ball is in play in their territory....maybe 5,6 times a game? Put the ball in the hands of your best to affect as much of the game as possible....

system hiccup....double reply....

I think this comment supports starting your ace, if the "other" pitcher walks this many in an inning, it does not matter how much it helps your D having your ace at SS.

In a game like this, win or go home and your the underdog, you start your ace 100% of the time.

Start your ace in a one and done scenario if he can go...absolute no brainer...
