Is Using the N-Word A Fireable Offense For Police Officers/Chiefs?

I am talking about the bigger issue of the use of the word. As it stands now we have a double standard in this country. Until we eliminate the double standard, every other discussion is fruit of the poisonous tree.

Official officer discipline needs to be the same for all officers, all up and down the chain of command, all races, and both sexes.

What you are describing is political correctness and that will lead us down the path of destruction.

It's in no way political correctness.

All cultures have terms that are acceptable if used within the culture but NOT acceptable if used by others. That's not PC.

However, I do think that your point about a double standard may have validity even though the reason for firing the white officer would not be the same for firing the black officer because of how the word was used. It would cause an internal issue that could potentially cause problems for the public.

So let's couch that piece for a second and get back to the original point.

Can you allow a white officer to be on your force if the public finds out he joked about hanging black people or saying he hates black people? Is a suspension enough? What would a suspension accomplish?

Going back to your original question Clyde, I don't have a good answer.

You see the challenge though, correct?

I am trying to stick to your terms in this thread but I see many challenges double standards present.

If you want to pin me down, I am sticking with you have to treat every officer the same.

And since we are going there, what about black officers that use the terms: Cracker, Whitey, Slim Shady, Elvis, 8 Mile, Ric, Frosty, etc?

Which one is offensive to you?

None

You lost me then. Where's the double standard?

I guess you have to ask yourself are there any words that some white people find offensive when used by people of other races to describe them?

And my point is, if we are going to go through all the white officers texts, emails, MDT messages, etc. looking for trouble we need to do the same for all the black officers and the off limits menu is much bigger.

Frankly, the way we in America are attacking the police these days I really fear for our safety 10 years and beyond.

Now can I grill out cat and pick this up tomorrow?

Totally agree RU. Would ANYONE on here want their kid to be a cop right now...especially in the inner city? The next year, five years, ten year are just going to be brutal for cops. We ask them to protect us and make split second decisions all the time but then sit on our couches and have no trouble second guessing them. And their pay is not that good - why would anyone want to do it??

Depends on the context and context is very easy to see when it is broken down for everyone to see. If there is a black cop using it in the same context as post #s 1, 4 and 6 then he should be fired too. There are black cops who hate black people too. Anyone of any color using it in that context should be fired. You're supposed to serve and protect. Not hate, serve and protect.

Lots of reports recently where police officers/police chiefs have been found to have made jokes about blacks using the N-word or saying "I hate n----."

Fireable offense?

Fire away...take away his pension too!

Because we all know that police officers are the only public servants that ever say anything or tell jokes like that...Fire em all!!!

Seriously that word shouldn't be used ever.

As long as it is in common speech in movies and used by comedians we pay to see...white people are going to slip up and use it. I remember seeing Eddie Murphy and Richard Prior as a young man, you couldn't tell half of their jokes later without using the magic word. Does that make me a racist for repeating a funny Eddie Murphy or Richard Prior joke? Should have been fired if I was telling someone about just seeing Eddie Murphy/Chris Rock/David Chapelle in an email and repeated one of the jokes? I love the song Gold Digger, should a policeman be fired if he's videoed sitting in traffic singing along to that song on the radio and saying that word over and over?

Kanye said the word over 30 times last night on TV but it was muted out each time, but if you knew the words and sang along should you be fired if your a cop?

I'm not comparing that to what ever this guy did or didn't say, just where is the fire/not fire line.

True, but did you love everyone you represented? I bet there were a few you hated yourself for having to take up for them, but you did it because it was your job...and you are a righteous dude and didn't let your personal feeling come between you and doing your job.

Yes. Yes I did. Otherwise I wouldn't have ran for union president. I've never hated anyone based on their skin color, religion, political beliefs, etc. I only hate stupid people and that's it. How can anyone say they trust a cop using language like Clizzy posted in posts 1,4 and 6? I sure wouldn't trust that cop. The cop singing Kanye or Jay-Z wouldn't bother me in the slightest though.
