Clyde Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Lots of reports recently where police officers/police chiefs have been found to have made jokes about blacks using the N-word or saying "I hate n----." Fireable offense?
theguru Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Lots of reports recently where police officers/police chiefs have been found to have made jokes about blacks using the N-word or saying "I hate n----." Fireable offense? As long as you fire the black officers too, then sure.
Clyde Posted May 18, 2015 Author Posted May 18, 2015 As long as you fire the black officers too, then sure. That would depend on why one considers the offense to be fireable.
Clyde Posted May 18, 2015 Author Posted May 18, 2015 An example of a text/email from the captain of the Sheriff's department in Dayton. What do apples and black people have in common? They both hang from trees. Heck, that one didn't even use the n-word but it's the same issue. Fireable?
UKMustangFan Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 IMO, it's a disciplinary offense. There's no way an officer can use it, and claim to not be prejudiced against blacks IMO.
Clyde Posted May 18, 2015 Author Posted May 18, 2015 Same guy texted "I hate n----s." Accountable for his words? Is it the same as a black guy calling one of his fellow black guys his "n----?"

How can you serve and protect all citizens when you think a percentage of the population should be lynched?!
Clyde Posted May 18, 2015 Author Posted May 18, 2015 There are plenty of other examples from forces around the country. Can we have officers who have sworn to protect the ENTIRE public keep their jobs after making these statements/jokes? How would you sell keeping them to the black portion of the public?

I would definitely lean towards fireable, but at the very least strict disciplinary action. Of course, I may be way off base as I've been accused of being too severe with my punishments on here.

Of course, I may be way off base as I've been accused of being too severe with my punishments on here. Let me argue the other side for your thought of "strict disciplinary action." What would change when the officer returned? The punishment cannot change his attitude. He just won't be stupid and text those thoughts anymore. So you're still back to the challenge of trying to sell the black community that they'll get equal treatment.
theguru Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 That would depend on why one considers the offense to be fireable. I don't think an officer should be fired for using the slur but then again no officer should ever be using the slur and they should be disciplined. The solution here is plain and simple, no double standards.

The solution here is plain and simple, no double standards. Not a double standard. The reason you would discipline/fire the offender is because of the loss of trust with a portion of the public. How does a black guy calling another black guy the n-word cause the police to lose that trust?
theguru Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Not a double standard. The reason you would discipline/fire the offender is because of the loss of trust with a portion of the public. How does a black guy calling another black guy the n-word cause the police to lose that trust? I am talking about the bigger issue of the use of the word. As it stands now we have a double standard in this country. Until we eliminate the double standard, every other discussion is fruit of the poisonous tree. Official officer discipline needs to be the same for all officers, all up and down the chain of command, all races, and both sexes. What you are describing is political correctness and that will lead us down the path of destruction.
TheDeuce Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 If you have a white officer documented having used the n-word and DON'T fire him/her, you're asking for trouble, IMO. Black cops shouldn't use it either, especially on duty.
