Think about these numbers before you call a pro a lousy player. Andy Dalton is an AWESOME QB!

He's not but I'd take being the worst of the best, still better than millions of other players and sure beats the alternative.

Agree 110%

Id love to be a pro athlete no matter how good or bad I was.

Yep. This is also one of the reasons I laugh when I hear people say "I could do as good as him", when talking about a pro player who may be struggling. Usually the response is "No, you can't". It's also why I have no issues with the money these guys make. Pro athletes are a very select group, that can do things 99.9% of the population cannot.

Great thread, Hellbird. It is worth pointing out (Hellbird will appreciate this) that these astounding statistics include D1, D2, and D3. So (not anyone on here) anyone who tries to belittle Division 3 athletics is completely misinformed, as playing D3 is still an amazing accomplishment for high school athletes.

I wonder if the reason for the higher percentage in D1 is that they are combining D1 and D1AA together for football. I don't know if that would make a difference or not.

Did you mean FCS? lost me with the D1AA line.

I would assume that. I still refer to FCS as D1-AA myself, as I grew up in an area with quite a few 1-AA programs. It's a hard habit to break.

We are showing our age when I say I'm with you on that lol.

The FCS throws me for a loop still lol.

I ain't gonna lie...I get the FCS and FBS mixed up all the time....just easier to say D1-AA and D1 for me.

I'm just glad those kids get an opportunity to play where there is some type of medical staff available to help with injuries.

If you've seen some of the trainers for some teams you wouldn't be so excited, I'm talking all levels too.

^I can only speak for the medical/training staff at UK, but Jim Madaleno and his staff are tremendous at what they do with the players at Kentucky. Can't give them enough accolades. Tremendous.

Word

I think it's .9%. Almost 1%. That's not adding in the FCS schools 63 per team at around 106 teams that do offer schorliship football.

Using those numbers, you are looking at 17,471 total D1 scholarships available for 1,093,234 athletes... A percentage of just about 1.6%.

I have always said that the NBA/NFL are the most rarefied gene pools in the world. Those guys are, literally the most freakish freaks of nature...

d1 FBS and D1 aa FCS. You have a 1.6% chance of a full ride schorlship.
