Probability of competing beyond High School

Featured Replies

Thought this was an interesting article. It covers all the sports so this could have been put in any forum on here.

You can look at every sport and see what % of players go from High School to college and college to Professional etc.

I found it interesting that there is a higher % of high school football players that play DI than any other level. I believe a lot of it has to do with the roster sizes in DI. I don't know many DI teams that have less than 100 kids on their rosters.

Pretty interesting stuff.

I wonder if the reason for the higher percentage in D1 is that they are combining D1 and D1AA together for football. I don't know if that would make a difference or not.

I'm sure they are, but they also have huge roster numbers also which accounts for walk ons etc.

The one thing that surprised me though was how few the number of players who play in HS that go on and play in college. For having over 1 million high school players and only 71k college players seemed pretty amazing to me.

I just saw this article and was coming here to post it. I've been saying on BGP since joining, that the chances of playing at the college level just aren't very good for the vast majority of high school athletes.

As far as football numbers, D1 is the largest Division in terms of number of schools (if you count both FBS and FCS), which accounts for why they get more players. There are 246 D1, 148 D2, and 237 D3 schools.

The percentage of college baseball players drafted surprised me.

I never knew the total number of schools, that makes sense when you look at the % at each level. Thanks for posting that.

In the end, unlike some of the threads last year trying to downplay any player who plays at the next level if it isn't DI as anything but an accomplishment, hopefully this article will put that to rest. This goes for a certain poster who just last week tried to claim DIII wasn't legit. Anyone who plays at the next level should be proud no matter what level they play at. It's more of an exception than the majority as some tried to make it out to be.

It did at first also until I thought about not only the Farm systems but also other professional leagues such as Pioneer league, California league, and all the leagues and fall ball leagues that are spread all over the west and mexico etc.

You have that and then the actual number of players on college teams are usually in the 20's so 2 players out of a college team playing professionally in some type of league isn't really that surprising to me.

Nice thread HB and thanks for the share. :thumb:

Provides good perspective!

10,795 D1 FBS scholarships available out of 1,093,234 hs players. That's .009%. Crazy numbers. Thanks for sharing the info HB. Good stuff.

That makes you think, the players that are offered the opportunity to play in college are special. The NFL wow!

Think about these numbers before you call a pro a lousy player. Andy Dalton is an AWESOME QB!

Some slip through the cracks.

Nope, a pro is the elite of the elite. The lowest ranked QB in the NFL is still an awesome QB, just not a very good NFL QB.

Some slip through the cracks.

Nope. The worst pro athletes are 100x better than your average high school star. I had the privilege of playing with and against quite a few MLB players while in college. Those guys were just on a completely different level.

I think it's .9%. Almost 1%. That's not adding in the FCS schools 63 per team at around 106 teams that do offer schorliship football.
