May 13, 201511 yr Daughtry didn't do bad after. Musically he's had more success then Hudson. I thought about mentioning him too. His first two albums sold really well, and had some decent, even if formulaic songs. I honestly didn't even know he released two more albums, the last one in 2013, neither of which sold even close to what his first two sold. To be fair, there are more than a few others that had some success. But none have been able to much of anything long term.

But I've met plenty of talented artists that couldn't catch a record deal to save their life, and on the flip side, there are plenty of acts that I find really lacking in talent that are doing very well. While I do think you can make it without being super talented (being likeable, and great marketing can make up for lack of talent, for example), I think you do need talent to have any extended, longer term success. Which is why I think you've seen very little staying power for most of the Idol artists.

Case in point, I once saw an episode of "Blahh-blahh-blahh DIY Insert Show Name" where they took a Spanish Revival style home with a leaky roof, and showed people how easy it was to just "pop off the tiles, put down tar paper and replace things with a neat dimensional shingle of your choice". I've also seen 100 year old parquet floors painted over with a "neat checkerboard pattern", and several other things done to homes to permanently damage any architectural/design value that once existed. The term I find most applicable to those HGTV shows is "re-muddling" rather than remodeling.
