May 8, 200620 yr Maybe I am wrong, but from what I saw that day, they were not opposed to the 7th and 8th grade "playing up" proposal but were opposed to requiring students to select schools for high school (grade 9) prior to grade 7. Is that what you meant? But by far the biggest opposition I saw was to any way, shape, form or fashion of a two-year penalty. Did you get the same read? You are correct. I don't think they are opposed to a 7/8th grader playing up, they just were not in favor of such playing time making them ineligible for sports if they attend a high school different from the one their 7/8th grade schools feeds into. And there was almost unanimous opposition to anything other than a one year ineligibility period for anything. Thank goodness for common sense.

Yes, sometimes a systematic checks and balances requirement works. What some people view as "slow progress" others might view as necessary systematic review to prevent a knee-jerk reaction. And ultimately, if you really think something through and look at its impacts over the long haul, common sense prevails.
May 10, 200620 yr Author I hope you are right guys (that common sense will prevail). Please keep us all posted on the rest of the story.
May 13, 200620 yr Just one wrench into the game plan is the KHSAA exists because the Kentucky BOE allows it..... If the public districts buck enough you will see a change....All the publics want is equal playing ground....We will see what happens in the next few years but I really think the privates will be left out of KHSAA competetion unless they will be willing to under the microscope.
May 13, 200620 yr Please explain how you think that private schools don't already live under a microscope? Sounds a whloe lot to me like you play the way we want to or we take our ball and go home. BTW now that OJ has left Rose Hill and you can beat their brains in again do you still boycott them?

BTW now that OJ has left Rose Hill and you can beat their brains in again do you still boycott them? What do you want??? Complete and full riegn over who and what will you'll get for students or are also willing to send a bus to Huntington WV and South Point OH to bring your kids to your private school? The KHSAA EXISTS because of STATE money....Lets keep debating because there is definately alot of tax payers that think the playing field is not quite equal and the anamosity is growing by the day.... I don't think we need to seperate, but there needs to be accountablity on both sides of the fence. What's you solution???
May 13, 200620 yr Where is there not accountability now? I have said all along that if a school (public or private) violates the rule they should be punsihed but I guess that isn't enough is it? You wouldn't like it if I told you my solution so I won't.
May 14, 200620 yr The KHSAA EXISTS because of STATE money....Lets keep debating because there is definately alot of tax payers that think the playing field is not quite equal and the anamosity is growing by the day.... State Money? A private entity designated by a public entity to manage a voluntary participation activity (not a right, a priviledge activity) that gets $0 from state tax base. So how are they state? But your last question is the most important. Everyone seems to hav identified perceived or real problems. But no one has identified a solution that will pass the proper regulatory agencies (State Board of Education, Legislature, etc.). So what's the answer? Or do we need to get the world's largest agriculture laser plane device to level all of the playing fields?

May 16, 200620 yr The NEW State Board of Education just met in Natural Bridge last week and new members were sworn in. The skinny is that many of the NEW Board members are staunchly against ridiculous splitting proposals and that the primary focus may shift to more effective (and probably draconian) enforcement of recruiting violations.
May 16, 200620 yr We privates have no problem with enforcement of the rules so long as they are equally enforced on the publics, particularly the "open enrollment publics". Actually, I guess that we, too, would like to see a "level playing field" for a change. By the way, since it has been posted that the public people pay all of these taxes to the Commonwealth, thus insinuating that we privates do not, I wonder where all of that income tax and property tax I pay each year goes. Of course, I could also mention the insurance tax and utility tax that we in Ashland are "blessed" with that go to the "support" of the Ashland public schools. Somehow, I feel overly used by the good people of the Ashland Independent School Corporation. I sure am not getting any return on my investment.
May 17, 200620 yr I heard recently that if the BOE does not do something concrete soon that when the vote comes up again the publics are going to vote for the split again next year. Then I hear about the fringe things..........seperate from the KHSAA...........

May 18, 200620 yr After paying all of those taxes to support the public schools, I don't have enough left for a six pack of PBR.
