Study: Kentucky/Southwest Ohio Region Among The Most Racist People In The US

Featured Replies

The map shows the frequency of words tagged to be either homophobic or racist...however, it does not show WHO is using these words. So, if two gays are having a joking exchange and call themselves homo's (as I know some do), and/or two blacks are calling each other the n-word, as we know they do, how does this equate to racism or homophobia?....it doesn't. And....the frequency is just as much an indicator of population density.

Looking at the map there were areas that showed even worse than Ky and SE Ohio, also just like you said, does that count for people of the same type calling eachother the H word or N word? I can't see anything too scientific with this study. Too many unanswered variables.

I would think the fact that they can mine this data would be sobering to people.

So a study about words and we don't know what the words were ? I didnt click on the link . Sounded like a garbage study to me .

Ok I clicked on a the link and all it shows is a map of the 2012 presidential election results .. wait ... ah forget it , it wasnt .

I would think the fact that they can mine this data would be sobering to people.

I would agree one thousand percent.

No offense to you or Jim but this is always my favorite comment from other white people. Put down the area you grew up in or live and preach about other people's faults

As I noted in my post, if you truly love the place where you live, you'll be honest about the good and the bad of it, and everything in between.

When you zoom in past the first map that comes up it looks dramatically different...

I have lived all over. I'm from Charleston, SC where the confederate flag is still waving (by white AND black people...though many people will say there's no way a black person would ever condone that flag). I can say with 100% confidence in my statement that I have seen more hate and racism in this area than I ever did in Charleston. I'm not sure if it's the fact that down there it's not as taboo to talk about race so we just faced it, but my classmates and I all went to the same plantations on field trips, we all went to the market downtown, and we all went to the same HS (unlike this area, my HS had 4k people. They didn't have a ton of HS's within one county). What I have experienced here is more people trying to overcompensate or try to tiptoe around the subject of race or their feelings about race. I've also seen more people try to make statements that they think will gain them points in the eyes of the other race which, to me, is still part of the issue. We're all people...if you spend too much time concerning yourself with the color of someone's skin, being ultra conscious to whether you call someone "black" or "african american" then you're still harboring some sort of bias in there.

Anyway, that was long winded. Sorry. I don't think this area is the most racist or hate filled by ANY means, but it's definitely more noticable to me here than it ever was down south.

coldweatherfan, I had to delete your post. I know you were trying to be informational but we can't have all those slurs on BGP. Powers greater than us need to keep drawing up sides and hopefully one day we can all be transparent.

Sorry.

Thought it'd be ok since it was in the link.

It's totally cool.

Just read the link everyone.
