Pew first: Gun rights top gun control in major public opinion shift

Featured Replies

Exactly two years after President Obama's bid for gun control following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting died in Congress, a new poll has discovered a huge shift in public opinion to backing Second Amendment gun rights and away from controlling gun ownership.

The reason: Americans now believe having a gun is the best way to protect against crime, 63 percent to 30 percent.

So, in your and rockmom's opinion, it's because people have been bought and they couldn't have possibly figured out on their own that guns can and have made homes, businesses and other places safer.

If I had to guess, people's views have changed due to gun crime falling in such a large degree over the past 10 or so years despite 1) the assault weapons ban expiring in 2004 and 2) the number of states allowing concealed carry and the increasing number of people concealed carrying rising substantially during that time frame. I assume many people's view has come to believing that guns (even the type originally banned by the assault weapons ban) are not a problem in the hands of law abiding citizens and that gun control laws haven't done an affective job in keeping guns out of the hands of non law abiding citizens since those same citizens tend to break gun control laws and laws in general by their nature.

People are starting to realize it's mental/emotional health that is the real problem. Guns protect us from those people who crack.

I'm very surprised as I sure thought the momentum was blowing the other way.

Hillary will do all she can to take them away soon enough sadly.

I think when events like Sandy Hook and Aurora occur, much of society's response is different than it was say 20 - 25 years ago. Back a few decades ago, after mass shootings, people blamed the gun thinking banning the gun would prevent or atleast reduce such events so the Assault Weapons Ban was passed pretty easily in 1994 with a 10 year life before a sunset provision would expire the ban. During the life of the ban, mass shootings still occurred due to the shooter's ability to obtain weapons with illegal means, the most infamous being Columbine of course. At that point, people (myself being one, yes I did used to support gun control) began to question the effectiveness of bans and other gun control methods especially when they come at the expense of others' liberties.

Today I look at gun control about the same as I look at alcohol bans/prohibition. They open unregulated, out of control black markets which most often empower and enrich unsavory individuals along with infringing on people's rights. While prohibition famously empowered and enriched the mafia, I could see strict gun control doing the same for the Mexican Cartel as they are losing business in the marijuana industry as more US states legalize it.

I've been hearing the same thing about the current President for years.

So long as Republicans and moderate Southern and Southwestern Democrats hold a majority in both houses of congress, Hillary will be limited in what she can do. If we have a mass Democrat surge in congress like back in either 2004 or 2006 (I forget which), we could be in serious trouble.

When it comes to gun control, Obama let the majority that supported him early in his presidency slip away before passing gun control. Once he lost the House, he was limited to what he could do. He has tried using extraordinary means to go around congress such as making ammunition more difficult to purchase such as banning M88 type but fortunately the Constitution has held up for the most part.

Protected rights. Are just that. Walking down the street with a fire arm isn't a crime. Open carrying a gun isn't a crime. Sad that so many people and police don't know this. This is costing police department lots of money every year. You can't stop a guy for the just walking down the street with a gun.

So he's not gonna take all our guns?
