MO. city elects first black mayor, 80% of the police and others resign

Featured Replies

Maybe they quit because she's a woman. :D

Now THAT would make sense as a reason to resign.

Kidding, kidding. I just enjoy messing with Rockmom.

No resignation letters have been found and the city computers were wiped clean. Excellent transition to new leadership.

I guess I am confused on politics. The previous mayor has served 37 years on 2 terms. How long does a term last for a mayor, 18.5 years?

I would be guessing but I bet a lot has to do with the previous mayor has been there for over 30 years and the new mayor promised to clean up the city. Do you think these officers and other personnel saw the gravy train ending. The ousted mayor said the resignation letters cited safety concerns. So what happened to the letters.

I read that to mean that he served two separate stints as mayor, with a gap in between.

There's a new story up on the AP wire right now about this with comments from residents of the town. The implication by those residents is that the "cleaning up" that will be done by the new mayor is corruption. Many of those people quoted were wondering why they needed six police officers in a town of 700 or so people. Or what they were doing while on duty, which was wondered aloud by a business owner who had been robbed multiple times over the years.

I just read that the 37 years were consecutive but the two terms are when he actually had to run against someone. All the other times he won unopposed which didn't count towards a term. Sounds plausible

And I lean towards corruption more than racism. Wiping the computers clean?

The key term in this story is not "black" or "woman." It's "city clerk."

Well if he's been robbed multiple times over the years that might explain why they need 6 cops.

That's not quite the sentiment I gathered.

Missouri town, new mayor grapple with mass resignations - Statesville.com: Ap

Like Nelson, Parma convenience store owner Lisa Kirk found news that the town had a six-person police force curious, saying she seldom saw much of a patrol. Over the past decade, she said, her shop has been burglarized or robbed nine times.

"There was never police around in town," said Kirk, 58. "We have no idea where the six officers worked or who they are. If they did work, I don't know where they were."

I get it. It wouldn't surprise me if it's just a small town police department and the mayor let them do whatever they wanted. Now a new mayor is in town and they saw the writing on the wall. They probably knew they were on the way out and decided to quit before getting fired.

Yeah, it's hard to be corrupt when the new mayor won't let you be corrupt.

My thoughts exactly.

Yeah, it's hard to be corrupt when the new mayor won't let you be corrupt.

That's a possibility but there's no evidence of corruption right now, correct?

And it wasn't just the police quitting...

I should add, corruption wouldn't shock me. I forgot about the files being deleted. Do they know who did that?
