I think one of the reasons he was considered was there was no teaching positions at Ashland currently. I think if given a chance he will do fine. Ashland does have some talent in both the seventh and sixth grades. I do wonder if any of those kids will move to Russell because Coach Jason Strader coached both grades.

If coach Biggs was to old school , a 29 year old new coach is more likely to relate with todays kids, I would think. And just because kids are good in the 6th or 7th grade doesn't mean they will be in high school. Some grow early , than not much more . Some stop working on there game. Just saying I`ve seen more than a few pee-wee ,jr high players not turn out to be what people thought they would. But also some kids that aren't that good young , turn out good later. Just hard to predict young players.

If Ashland is relying on 6th and 7th graders to resurrect their program, I hope patience is the word of the day there. You can't realistically expect 6th-7th grade kids to produce at the varsity level until they are at least sophomores, more likely juniors.

They'll be fine. I don't know if they can "dominate" like they used to but there is talent walking those halls honestly. I've seen it at the YMCA (I can tell the difference between Y talent and real high school talent). They got some athletes who can play. Quinton Baker even tweeted if he liked the new coach he may play, and that's your best athlete in the school.

Not that I wouldn't do it, but I never hired an assistant to take over a job as head coach after I fired a head coach, but that is just me. I did however bring back an assistant as a head coach after some significant time had gone by to take over as a head coach.

 

Good luck to this young man, I think that his relationship with the community as well as being a former Ashland standout will assist him in many ways @ winning over the returning players, community, & fans. Hope it works out for him.

Lol, I actually complimented coach Biggs coaching ability. Personally I have nothing against the man, I just don't think he was the right man for the job. No matter how good of a coach you are, you won't succeed if people don't want to play for you. I'm not trying to rag on Biggs, I'm just responding to the comments that are condescending to J Howell, more less people claiming Ashland didn't get who they wanted. When it reality I doubt any of us really know, this coaching search has been hashed to death and I for one am happy with the choice. I'm also glad its over and done with.

Administration wants to go in a different direction but they hire somebody from the same staff. That doesn't make sense! It is definitely not a knock on Coach Howard because he had nothing to do with the decision other than apply.

 

After this decision, it makes you wonder if Ashland's problems don't start at the top.

Who is Coach Howard?

I meant to say "Coach Howell" had nothing to do with the decision.

They didn't fire Biggs due to his lack of coaching ability. It was due to some of his rules, which in turn led to a lack of kids wanting to play for him. Jeremy is completely different in that aspect, sure he will have rules that everyone will have to comply with. But I seriously doubt he will try to control every aspect of a kids life. Ashland's recent problems weren't due to Bigg's coaching ability, it was do to the lack of a connection with the kids. Jeremy won't have that problem.

 

Want to bet that there will still be plenty of kids who won't play and it two years they will be blaming the coach?
