April 9, 201511 yr I have yet to understand what Calipari and supposedly now, Coach K's, "blueprint" is? Get the best players available to your school? It is a different climate, but that idea has never changed. Had the 1997 recruiting class of Elton Brand, William Avery, and Shane Battier (well maybe not him), been in this environment, they would have bolted after their Freshman season.That was at the start of folks leaving real early, so the concept was taboo. I do not buy in to this "Coach K has adapted" narrative. No, he landed 3 high profile recruits. He has done it before, but these guys are a little better and it worked. The impression from Coach K, et al. is that typically he would not have recruited Okafor, Jones, and Winslow in previous seasons. Baloney. Calipari is just a hype machine about it all. That is the only difference.

That is the only difference. I think it's more than that. You have to know how to coach them. Knowing they will only be there one year creates a lot of pressure on not only the players to prove they are worthy of going one and done but also the coaches as well. The coaches of one and dones have the toughest coaching jobs imo. They have to deal with the ego's of each individual and make sure he can get them to buy into his concept of team comes first, and do this all in one season. It doesn't always work, Goodwin is a perfect example. Goodwin was all about himself and it showed in his poor play trying to force too many things to happen to make him look good. Kobe Bryant in no way would have worked out at Kentucky in this day and age simply because he would never take a back seat to the team. There is no way Kobe would have been happy playing for UK this year in a rotation/platoon style. So it is tough on coaches not only knowing they have to create a team like atmosphere for these ego's that come into town but also knowing that they will most likely have to start all over the very next year with a brand new crop coming in that will make up the majority of the starting lineup. I kid about Coach K and all, but he learned this year that in today's era of college basketball you do have to learn to adapt and he admitted he has done that. I believe he is the type of coach that would rather mold his new recruits into a style of play that he liked to coach and that would mean slowly molding the players into their roles and that would be in his 3-4 year time frame. I think a lot of coaches couldn't do what Coach cal and K has done. These players have ego's that need to be held under control and it takes a special coach to do that and be successful. My hats off to both coaches for adapting and showing how it's done.
April 9, 201511 yr And I will take UK's 8 championships. Then UK will take a backseat to UCLA's 11 which make UK 2nd best and Duke 3rd bedt. I can live with that. However Duke's titles will always be in the better competitive years of basketball.

There are people that will say the more competitive years were before the one and done's and before the 3 point shot. some also say the more competitive days were when there was less teams and the competition wasn't watered down. Just look at the game today compared to 30 years ago. Scoring is way down and it's not all attributed to defense, there are just some bad shooting teams out there. So when you say Duke titles were better competitive years is up to debate. To me it doesn't matter when titles were won because every era is different. the competition for each era was the best it could be for each era including today's game. If the era's did matter and you look at the big picture, some could say UK's titles are more impressive because they have won them in every era, every type of competition and have adapted to every style of the game.

Those people who feel a 1948 championship is better than a 2012 championship where you need more games and more rounds to win are mistaken. But a championship is a championship whether we like it or not.
