I believe the game is for graduated KY seniors. Owens has and will not graduate. He has from what Im told left Boyd Co. high school and went back to Lexington.

Only the top four leading scorers in the State this year, that is all.
Actually, none of the top 26 scorers made the team. Of course, not all of them were seniors, but there were some on the list that were given a decent chance to make the team.

But hey, I know, scoring isnt everything.....
No, it isn't. Owens' non-selection probably had little to do with his ability. And one mountain kid that might have had a chance to make the team (one of the top scorers to which you referred) didn't even show up at the tryouts.

Then perhaps the high schools are lucky they don't have the graduation ratios to watch over like the NCAA coaches and AD's do?

Anyone ever consider how that would work in HS ?

Just a thought...

How did Fothergill from Southwestern do? I heard he was one of the best 3 pt shooters at the tryouts. Wasn't he one of the leading scorers at the scrimmage?

Penick is a good player, but proposing that by taking him we would have a shot at stopping Greg Oden is ludicrous... Oden would make most in the country, nevertheless our state, look like idiots...

I understand what you are getting at, because I read some of the same articles of Owens purposely dropping one class so he could go to MMI Prep School next year.

BUT, on a different note, if he wasnt eligible to play, then why did he get invited to try-out????????:D

when he was invited to try outs, I would quess his status was not in question.

he was probably still in good standing.

In the first two scrimmages Fothergill was 2 for 11. He had an uneventfull try out.

Walt Allen won't score in double figures in either game for Kentucky. This will go down as one of the most lopsided series in the history, despite the great coaching efforts of Riley.

Walt Allen not scoring in double figures - and your point? IN beat Ky by 37 in 1960 / In beat Ky by 36 in 1947 / Ky beat In by 33 in 1997 , I hope Ky makes it a close game and only wins by 5 points in overtime.

Prep schools generally accept fifth-year guys. I assume that Owens could graduate from Boyd (or whererver) and still attend MMI next year.

The point is Walt Allen will not score in double figures. People at the game will be watching and wondering how he was named Mr. Basketball. Any other year, this team fares well with this mix of players and coaches.

That is what I was thinking also, so I didnt understand why the paper said that Owens dropped a English class, just so he could go to a Prep School next year. Maybe he wants to play in the state of KY again as a Senior. I have supported Owens 100 percent all year, but I dont agree with that decision.

Maybe he didn't complete his writing portfolio, which is a state requirement for English IV. In most schools this is due by the end of March.
