Is below 40 degrees the "tipping point"? I know it is not good to be playing when it's this cold for the bats, especially with how much they cost.

 

This past Monday we played Dixie an the temp was around 37-40 the whole game, add in the freezing rain and the gale force wind, and it made for just a horrible experience.

Yes, too cold below 40, especially Monday and in particular for umpires…..pay no attention to the indoor cat, she probably hasn't been outside since mid-October….:popcorn:

I agree , below 40 with any clouds and/or wind is just too much. We played two years up north in ohio against Jenna Lilly's N Canton Hoover team ( top 10 type nationally ) and the game was delayed 20 minutes for snow in the IF during the 2nd inning. Snow melted off , we resumed. The wind was blowing sleet and snow so hard our pitcher said she couldn't see the catchers signs. That is too cold .

This sat calls for high of 39 with sun, its opening day weekend for a lot of Ohio schools . I'd cancel.

Estill County canceled their triangle this Saturday with Boyle County and Rowan County because temperatures are gonna be 33 at the start of the Estill/Boyle game.

I'm just wondering if the Estill baseball game with Menifee will get played like scheduled. Game time for the game is 1 PM Saturday

Scheduled to call a game Friday at 6:00. Hopefully, they cancel.

When it's that cold you risk injuries (especially hamstrings). Pitchers also can't feel the ball and it effects their control (ever been beaned with a shot put? That's what the ball feels like when it''s cold!) The only reason for playing is to get a game in. You just may lose more than a contest if you choose to play!

It seems logical that since they have a heat index factor to stop play, there ought to be a cold index factor as well. The heat index as I understand it is based on a combination of temperature and relative humidity and is deemed unsafe somewhere around 104 degrees.

 

The cold weather guideline in my opinion ought to be based on the wind chill factor; if the wind chill is below freezing, baseball & softball games should be cancelled (and that is still too cold).

 

I really see no benefit on behalf of the players to be playing baseball/softball in extreme cold, windy and/or rainy conditions. Football/soccer yes, baseball/softball no.

Football/soccer start out in the warm weather and end in the cold so there would be no benefit to postponing the games since the weather is most likely going to get worse instead of better. In Baseball/softball, there are warmer days ahead and the games can be rescheduled later in the season.

 

And, in those two other sports, players are not trying to hit and catch a hard ball coming at them at high speeds. Football and soccer are considered to be played in all kinds of weather where baseball/softball are considered warm weather sports.
