The GOP legislature passed this discrimination bill and wrapped it in the crossed tunic of a Crusader. Then Pence signed it. Then the wheels fell off the wagon.

Today an amendment was passed that while obviously doesn't appease all, but does define restrictions to address discrimination, while exempting churches, etc.

 

I can tell you this with 100% accuracy, Indiana was (hopefully not now) perilously close to losing the Senior PGA, which occurs in less than 50 days.

I do not support discrimination. I do support respect for people's individual beliefs regardless of their source or interpretation. Obviously some thing taking actions like in the 1930s is the way to go to get their agenda across. Some believe that the LGBT agenda is similiar to the fight for racial equality. Racial issues were caused by a couple hundred years of a social structure that half the nation never adopted anyway. Changing beliefs about an institition that is thousands of years old is a lot harder. And after 50 years we still have work to do in the race area. Whether you support the LGBT open acceptance or not - and I support much of what the 'movement' wants - it will take time. And demonizing people or businesses in extreme ways is not a good tactic.

That would be incorrect, in my opinion. Off the top of my head, I can think of at least three reasons why the powers-that-be in Indiana feel compelled to backtrack, and they are at best only tangentially connected with appeasing those filthy gays and les...I mean, liberals. I have not done any research, so these are personal opinions and nothing more.

 

A. Political disaster. The ferocity of the response to the legislation was entirely unexpected, and it is my belief that there are several legislators - not to mention the governor - who would like to advance their political careers beyond the state borders. As someone probably mentioned earlier, sexual orientation is the new civil rights frontier, and championing the most conservative such legislation in the nation (heck, even ARIZONA wouldn't touch similar language) may not be the way to move past the state's borders in the next decade or two.

 

2. The perception - real or imagined - that Indiana is populated by a bunch of Bible-thumping, gay-bashing hayseeds needs to be altered ASAP.

 

D. As is often the case, the primary driver is money. With several corporations making noise about or actually cancelling initiatives, changes had to be made. This has little if anything to do with appeasing liberals. It has to do with lining the state's coffers. attracting industry and tourism, and being able to retain events like the Final Four and the NFL combine.

 

Again, appeasing gays and lefties ain't what this is about (the legislation would never have been drafted/enacted in the first place if that was a significant demographic). It's about retaining political power, altering a backwards perception, and most importantly, money.
