For those of you from RH/Ashland area, help me with my memory.

 

Did Bill Walker leave RH and go to school in WV for a year before going to Cincy? I seem to remember something about it and it seems like I remember something odd about it.

 

Did he go back a grade when he moved? If so, was it from 8th to 7th? 9th to 8th?

 

Am I making this up?

Walker was in the ninth grade at Rose Hill when he was withdrawn from school there. The following fall, he was enrolled as a freshman at North College Hill. I asked a similar question (where was he in the meantime?) last week in another thread, and never got an answer.

If I remember correctly he played in the 5/3 tournament but left shortly after. I believe it had something to do with eligibility, parent wanted him to be considered in the 8th grade but RH had him listed as a frosh.

There were a lot of questions about him and others along this line when they were in the area.

Here's what I remember. After 7th Grade Bill went back to WV. In WV at the time (no clue how it is now) you could not play Varsity below 9th grade (that's why they left in the first place IMO). When Bill went back to Rose Hill they listed him as a 9th grader because the school in WV that he left listed him as a 9th grader. When he left RH, I would guess he failed 9th grade, and repeated in his first year at NCH...

Maybe they just held him back and he repeated his 9th grade year.

Or maybe they lied and pulled some strings for the big time basketball player that was more important then any thing else. (besides well O.J.)

I'm not that familiar with the Tyler Smith soap opera, but did he really fail high schol for that reason, or did he fail at all? You don't have to fail to go to a prep school ... many of them offer fifth-year programs.

I've heard more than a few nasty things about the Smith/Pearl saga. I'll leave it at that for now...

I believe he wanted to be an 8th Grader and RH would not comply. He left sometime right before the State Tournament and then mysteriously showed up at NCH the following year as a 9th Grader(two years at 9th Grade w/o affected SR eligibility!) same as OJ.

During the course of the year, Walker continued to express the desire to be held back to the 8th grade(presumably it had something to do with playing on the same AAU team as OJ) but the Rose Hill administration stood by their position that the 8th grade class was full(I believe there was a waiting list at the time for other students wanting to enroll who were on the waiting list before Walker enrolled if memory serves correct). Once Walker realized he couldn't be held back, he then transferred to Cincinnati immediately prior to the All A Tournament in Richmond.

 

Walker was also at Rose Hill briefly as a 6th grader prior to returning to Huntington.

I asked because it will have an impact on his ability to play as a senior in high school. The rules say that once you start your FROSH year you have 8 semesters of eligibility from that point . IF he was a frosh when OJ was an 8th grader, then it would seem that his high school eligibility has been exhausted.

Ace, you are absolutely correct. I was teaching school at Rose Hill during that time and that is exactly why he left. The 8th grade enrollment was full with kids waiting to get in. He did not want to mess up his AAU status, so he left, right before the All 'A' Tourny.
