Louisville 66 Northern Iowa 53

Featured Replies

Didn't watch the second half, too late for me, but from what I saw in the first half I was really surprised Northern Iowa didn't try to go to Tuttle more often. Guy is a stud. They seemed to be content just hoisting up contested threes.

Louisville's typical defensive strategy is to clamp down on a team's best guy and force someone else to beat them. The Cardinals were all over Tuttle every chance they got which allowed open looks for Buss fairly often. When Buss was hitting, UNI stayed in the game in the second half. He couldn't get free enough. Mangok and Harrell did a nice job on the two big guys.

I just absolutely love seeing Q flourish at this level of basketball. He will only get better.

He is not nervous at all. Keeps his head through double teams and pressure in a way that's pretty amazing for a freshman. I wish he was better at free throws but hey, name me a Louisville player I don't wish that about.

Other than a 6 minute 1 for 10 or so scoring drought in second half it was a super game. Defense ruled and Rozier stepped (way) up. He may be the key here on out. If he takes on overall floor leadership and gets it done via his play and attitude it could be great run.

Blackshear is first Card to play in 4 Sweet 16s.

Of Louisville's eight losses this season, the teams responsible for six of them are still alive in the tournament and in the Sweet 16. Only Syracuse (postseason ban) and Virginia are out.

I enjoy watching Q. He reminds me of Peyton when he explodes to the basket. Going to fin to watch next 4 years.

Q is going to be one Cardinal fans love by the time he's done at UofL. He is already well on his way. Imagine what the post season will be like for him, actually being THE guy at the point. As PP stated, he's only going to get better from here.

Yeah, from a long-term standpoint throwing him into the fire when Rick did should only help Q and the program. May even pay off this season.

Couldn't stay up late enough to finish the game but sure liked what I saw our of U of L. Pitino always has them playing well this time of year.

True, but by the same token, UNI's successes were probably overblown. The home win against Wichita was impressive; but it was far and away their best win. The second best might have been a home victory over Richmond, an NIT team.

I find NC State's guard play and the sheer enormity of Beejay Anya much more terrifying.

I would MUCH rather be playing Villanova...

Guess that is right. My similar stat was that Blackshear has never experienced anything less than a Sweet 16. In 4 yrs., he never missed the tourney and never lost the 1st weekend. Other than the UCLA teams and Laettner's group (that did the same thing except Final 4s instead of Sweet 16s!!!), I wonder how many NCAA players have done that (or will do it in the future based on the 1 & done population).

Wayne Turner off the top of my head from UK. Didn't all of the Florida seniors from last season go to at least the Sweet 16 every year? So that is 4 others. I think it might be more than you are thinking. Still a heck of an accomplishment.

Slight correction: he's the first Cardinal to play in four consecutive Sweet 16s.

Milt Wagner received a medical redshirt in 1984-85. He played on Sweet 16 teams at Louisville in 1982, 1983, 1984, and 1986.
