I read this yesterday. How awful! Coach tries to do the right thing by getting kids off the bench and it bites him in the rear.

Tough break. I really feel for the kids on the team, particularly the kid that was the ineligible transfer...but how does this slip through the cracks?

.....and why does this come to light now? Seems like if there is any question of a player's eligibility it should be brought to light before now. What is the process in Ohio and ky? Is it completely up to the schools to determine eligibility on their own, or when a transfer arrives can you request that the organizing body perform due diligence and give the "all clear" before you play he kid and subject your team to this horrible fate?

I really think that each case should be viewed on its own merit.

 

A sanction going forward into next year, limiting them to three less games, or fewer scrimmages, might have been more appropriate.

 

With the things we see teams getting away with here in Kentucky, this is really small potatoes.

I felt differently about those comments. I don't see that as a legitimate reason NOT to fight it. There is always a first time for everything and the kids deserve to be fought for. Who knows, they could win and set precedent for future cases like this.

Don't feel sorry for anyone other than the kids, especially the one who lost playing time to the transfer. The rules on these things are clear but yet we have people continue to not abide by them. Rules stink but they are the RULES.

I don't think anyone lost any playing time to the transfer, and I don't think this was a case of a coach trying to get an advantage or skirt a rule. The kid hadn't played in a game since transferring, and played less than two minutes in this game, in garbage time of a 40pt win. Now I'm not saying the rule shouldn't be followed....certainly PM should have done a better job of making sure this kid was eligible to play.

I wouldn't think someone would have had to lose a roster spot. I don't think a coach would cut somebody in the middle of the season to make room for another kid. I would think the kid transferred in during the middle of the season and asked if he could maybe play. Coach gives him a tryout and just adds him to the team. I don't think there are any roster limits that would require someone to get cut to make room for a new kid.

Someone got cut at some point.... then this guy who couldnt play til end of the season was added. Gonna puts the whole team thing to the side in my book but to each its own, my guess is the kid was talented so they wanted to get him involved.

Yes, I'm sure people got cut, but that would have happened before the season started. Adding this kid after the season started would have had no effect on kids getting cut during tryouts....they would have had no idea this new kid was coming. And while I don't know for certain, I just can't imagine a coach cutting someone in the middle of the season to add a new kid.

Two things...as much as I love Scott Kerr, why wasn't the question asked, "Son, really need to make sure you haven't played in any games this year...here are the reprecussions of us putting you in a game if you've already played this season. So, did you see ANY game time during the season?"

 

I mean, I'm really lost how the kid, the kid's parents, or the coaches from the school he played at couldn't have all been asked this question and ONE of the three spew the correct information. How is this not discovered/vetted properly in this day and age.

 

THAT SAID, I agree with Mustang, I think these should be reviewed on a case by case basis. Sucks for those kids and coaches who - more than likely - had zero idea the kid saw floor time previously. Seems like a better system should and could be in place. Again, what's the best interest here...maintainin the hardline policy (i.e. rules are rules) or ensuring that penalties are meted out that reflect the depth of the infraction.

Man, that's crazy. I usually lean more towards the side of "stickler" when it comes to rules. However, in this case I think something other than dismissing them from the state tournament could have been done, especially in light of the players "playing" circumstances. A reprimand for the school and a small fine and immediate dismissal of the player in question off the team...something along those lines. Kid plays the last 2 minutes in a 40 point blow out? Sorry, the punishment just doesn't fit the "crime" here. Kinda like giving someone the death penalty for a parking ticket.

 

With all that said...it does seem it would have been more than easy to find out if the kid played basketball at the previous school this season. If that had been done, crisis averted.
