People are assuming that the PM coach and administrators didn't ask questions.

 

As was mentioned, in Ohio, if you transfer you sit out for awhile, not the whole year. After the kid did transfer around Christmas break PM did in fact sit him until he was allowed to play, and even then it was only a couple of minutes during a blowout win. I see the rules, but in this case to punish an entire team is just wrong, I may have some other views if the kid is a great player who will see more time than just at the end of a blowout.

 

The kid and most likely the parents knew he played in a game at his old school, as well as the coaches at that school. It is their responsibility to tell PM. But I guess since he wasn't going to play much, and would not determine if PM won a game the kid and the parent didn't mention it, figuring "He isn't an all star and if he gets in PM is either up or down a lot in a game.

I feel bad for the kids, but the admin at Purcell Marian only have themselves to blame. They can fight the OHSAA all they want to, but unless new info comes to light they are the ones in the wrong. Truly stinks for the team though, don't know if I agree with them being the ones to bear the brunt of the punishment.

You can ask all you the questions that you want, but if people don't tell the truth you at risk.

If Purcell asked the player and the parents if he played in a game and they all said no, I certainly ban the kid from sports at Purcell. I consider expelling him form the school.

Uh, I don't know, how about an idea of "innocent until proven guilty?

 

Fact: The kid, his family, and his old school knew that he played a few minutes in a game before transferring. Anything other than that? Where are the facts? And the old someone "informed" the association after someone wins thing. Sounds like someone may have had an ax to grin.

DePaul Cristo Rey responds to Purcell Marian's tournament disqualification

 

The Division III regional final game tonight at Kettering Fairmont's Trent Arena will feature Versailles against Shroder at 9 p.m. Versailles has the rare opportunity of a "second life" as they lost March 10 in the district title game, 68-54 to Purcell Marian.

 

On March 17, the OHSAA received an email saying Purcell Marian had used an ineligible transfer. Upon investigation, officials found a player who had previously played at DePaul Cristo Rey this season, appeared in the final minutes of an 81-41 tournament win over Blanchester March 5.

 

That player did not play in the ensuing wins over Badin and Versailles. Yesterday, OHSAA officials found the transfer was in violation of OHSAA Bylaw 4-7-3 that states once a student plays in a game, they cannot transter to another school within a 50-mile radius in the same season and be eligible in that sport.

 

Purcell Marian's coach Scott Kerr said AD Kenny Pope and DPCR principal Andrew Farfsing talked, but nothing was said about the kid playing basketball. He said the Cavaliers followed the standard transfer procedure and the player sat out 11 games. Kerr said the player was put in at the end of lopsided win as a reward for working in practice.

 

Farfsing has been out of town during this process but Director of Communications Margee Garbsch has issued the following statement:

 

"The student who transferred from DePaul Cristo Rey to Purcell Marian was enrolled at DePaul Cristo Rey High School until January 26, 2015. He was a member of the boys' basketball team and played in the DPCR game against Edgewood on Friday, December 5.

 

When contacted by Purcell Marian about the student's request to transfer, Principal Andrew Farfsing informed Purcell's Athletic Director that the student had played in one basketball game during the 2014-15 season. Principal Farfsing told both the student and his father that the DPCR game could affect the student's eligibility to play at another high school.

DePaul Cristo Rey has withheld no information. "

Purcell Marian athletic director Kenny Pope has deferred all questions to Purcell Marian Director of Communications Director Tammy Reasoner. As it was yesterday, she said Purcell Marian's focus remains on the positive.

 

"We're celebrating the great team we had and putting systems in place to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again," Reasoner said.

 

Along those lines, Purcell Marian is holding a Gold and White scrimmage tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m. to effectively end their season on a court as was originally planned.

Just a few quick takes:

 

Purcell has only Purcell to blame. Responsibility for understanding the OHSAA rules and ensuring eligibility via those rules falls strictly on the administrators of the students they supervise.

 

Based on the report LA provided, this is at best a he said, she said. In the end, it doesn't matter what DCR (Depaul Cristo Rey) did or didn't do. Once the kid transferred, he's no longer their responsibility. Again, blame falls on PM.

 

The rule is clear. If you have rules, you must follow them.

 

I thought the PM coach came across as at best unprofessional, and at worst a whiny nosed kid, with his remarks. Next time, we'll leave our starters in. Really? That's the best you can come up with? How about something about abiding by the rules of the OHSAA,and respecting their decision?

 

Once the OHSAA is informed of a potential violation, it's their responsibility to investigate, and then act accordingly. When postseason rolls around, schools better have all their i's dotted, and t's crossed. AD's across Cincinnati should know this after Colerain, circa 1995.

 

DCR and PM are ions apart athletically. I'm not sure what circumstances led a kid to play in only one game at DCR, and then end up on the PM post-season roster. Doesn't pass the smell test. I'd wonder more about this part.
