High School Basketball Withdrawal

Featured Replies

We're on the threshold of the ever exciting Kentucky High School Basketball Sweet 16, and I personally intend to absorb every last nuance I can from the tournament, and fully expect it to live up to its name as being the "Greatest Show in Hoops".

With that said, I can't escape that inevitable yearly feeling that it's almost over for the season.

Of course March Madness really isn't officially over until the championship game of the NCAA College Basketball Tourney, but that "Say it isn't so" feeling is already setting in, and I don't know about anyone else, but I go through this every year about this time where I just don't want to face that the season is almost over.

Sure, baseball is just around the corner, and it does all that it can to fill the void, and try as it might, it just can't for me give me that fix for my "Basketball Jones". Neither does the NBA.

Time passes, and I eventually get over it, but the withdrawal that temporarily sets in hits strong, and I go through this adjustment period to get sorted out again finding just what it is that strongly holds my interest.

You'd think that after so many years I'd be mentally prepared to ward off that dreadful feeling, but no chance, it's creeping right on back in again.

Am I being overly dramatic, or can anyone else relate? If your team has already been eliminated you may already know this feeling of which I speak.

What's your yearly tradition to help lesson the sting that B-Ball season is almost over?

I can completely relate. I don't have a team I follow but have been to well over 100 games this year and the Sweet 16 is always bittersweet. I love seeing the best compete for the title but dread the offseason.

I feel my wife may have the same sense of dread but more because I'll be home now.

I feel the same way with the NFL. I got ya'.

It is now softball season at the Compound. Not quite as exciting as basketball; at least not for me.

I often find I go through the five stages of grief whenever my team's season comes to an end. This morning I believe I'm in bargaining. I feel as though settling in to watch a nice NCAA run by Kentucky would be just the ticket to acceptance....

I am probably as totally immersed in high school basketball as anyone out there during our team's regular and post-season play.

However, once I come to grips with our final game of the season and the overall season just completed, I am happy to watch the remainder of the post-season with interest but have no withdrawal feelings that have been mentioned here.

I'm looking forward to next week's Boys State Tournament but for different reasons than most of you. I will get there Tuesday, have dinner at Pissano's and take in a movie on Tuesday night. Will get up Wednesday morning, have breakfast and then head to Keeneland for the simulcasts that afternoon. Will attend Rupp for the CovCath-Campbell County game Wednesday night and then back to Keeneland for the THursday simulcasts. Will probably go to Rupp for the Friday 1pm game that will involve either CovCath or Campbell County and when they are both eliminated will spend the rest of the weekend at Keeneland. Back home on Sunday for our program's Awards ceremonies that afternoon.

Starting April 5th (Easter Sunday) head to PIckwick Lake, Tennessee for three weeks of pursuing smallmouth bass, come home for Derby week and then head to Canada startng May 14th for four weeks of fishing north of the border. Back home for Summer YOuth Camp and then on with the summer.

No withdrawal here. Come next fall, I will be ready for another hoops campaign, but I really like the change of seasons.

Thankfully my team is still alive... When the season ends I will once again make my pilgrimage to Knightstown, Indiana. Hoosier gym is where they filmed the home games for Hickory in the movie Hoosiers. It's just 20 miles east of Indy. " I'll make it coach."

I am with you 100% - I hate to send it end every year. It's a similar feeling as I get when the time changes in the fall.....almost a depression (not clinically). It will be worse for me this year because my youngest son 2Runner is playing his senior season, and I have no more basketball playing sons in the pipeline.

Jeez Mustang, You are certainly living a charmed life. Keeneland Simulcast by day (Love the Oaklawn Meet), Pick and choose your State tourney games, then a fishing trip with the Derby mixed in? WTH? Who is your travel agent. That's awesome. Good for you.

Good lesson in having your ducks all in a row to help fill the void. Sounds like you've had this figured out for a good while to keep the good times rollin'.

It usually hits me when sometime during the quarterfinals when I realize, "This tournament is over halfway over"

Actually it's a sad state of the repitition of one season following another.

I've never gone through withdrawal. I usually am ready for the season to end and to get onto the next sport.

Got the itch for baseball.

If you follow Mustang on his bmustangs website, you'll find he is rather entertaining. Daily fishing reports, replete with photos of catch-of-the-day; not to mention Derby handicapping (ask him about the post-Derby pick-6 winner); throw in an occasional restaurant review (ask him how the Miamians pronounce "Italian" .. comical), as well as where to get the best Belgian waffles; throw in occasional updates on the Mustang baseball/softball/track teams. One-stop shop.

A rolling stone gathers no moss ....
