Browns sign Josh McCown

Browns have fixed their QB problems:)

So if/when McCown and Manziel can't get it done, who is the next QB in line?

I think they moving on from Hoyer.

Going with quantity at QB and hope one of them sticks. They probably feel Hoyer will most likely leave and they need more than Johnny especially since Johnny is a mess.

I hear Akili Smith might be available.

Well, I am a Browns fan and I'm not sure I understand it. Probably what has occurred is that Farmer disrespected Hoyer in some of those illegal texts and wanted Manziel on the field. Hoyer is going to find out he isn't wanted by some in the player personnel side of things. Hoyer also wants a chance to start and is going to ask for starter's money. Farmer probably won't pay it and so Farmer knows Hoyer is not long for Cleveland because they will not agree to terms.

So, the Browns pick up a verteran QB who knows he is not the future and is willing to play or mentor and probably both. McCown was in a bad situation last year where his rookie OC had heart issues in September and had to step away. The guy next in line was also a rookie in his position and so the offensive system was never really installed and was extremely unorganized. McCown was not good enough to overcome the hand he was dealt and had a miserable year: 1-10. Probably less about him than the perfect storm that hit in Tampa.

When McCown was in Chicago in 2013, he had a very good season: 3-2 with 13 TDs to 1 INT. He had an organized offensive system around him. McCown has worked with the new Browns OC in the past, Defilippo, and the two respect one another. McCown is hoping to see an organized system put in place by the start of the season and he will know how to work it. You get a veteran presence in McCown who would like to play but also knows his main role will be as mentor to someone else. Hoyer is less willing to be that guy.

This tells me Cleveland is not done with trying to find their future QB this season. Look for another move by the Browns in the QB department. Will they trade up to try to get one of the top 3 or wait til mid-rounds to pluck a diamond in the rough? I don't know, but I expect they will make a stab at another QB because they know the QB of the future is not on their roster now.

Having said that, my preference would have been for them to keep Hoyer and let him start the season as their man. He is capable of winning ball games. I think he is 10-6 as a starter for Cleveland.
