I'm told that things got chippy between the Magoffin coach and one of the referees. The coach got ejected for pretty much nothing, so the entire Magoffin team, fans, etc. all just left.

 

The game was a forfeit and it was senior night at Breathitt County.

Not judging, just being real. The only reason to quit is the team is in imminent danger and feel harm may occur. Somebody told them to quit, so lets see who it was.

Unless the girls were having bottles thrown at them from the stands I can't come up with a valid reason to walk off of the court.

I agree Clyde, as I said the same. Schools depend on home games to create revenue for their team, and they lost money by this team quitting. This wil be interesting to follow.

At this point, I only know what I've been told by Magoffin County folks. I'm not going to form any opinions until I hear the other side too. I do know that a Breathitt County official took the Magoffin coach's side. Hopefully some eye witnesses will post on here and give their take.

I know one thing, unless they've changed their policies, the KHSAA does not take lightly walking off the floor and ending a game early. They will probably hear something from the KHSAA for doing this.

Our boys JV coach quit a game before it was over at Oneida Baptist back in the early 2000's and we heard from the Commissioner's office the following Monday. I was AD at the time and I explained that our coaches told me (I wasn't at the game) that they were concerned about the safety of their players because the 13th region JV referees were allowing some hard fouls to go uncalled. One player had already been hurt on a breakaway layup when he was fouled and knocked to the floor. I was told by phone, and later by letter, that it didn't matter what the reason was that we weren't allowed to do that. I believe it was Tackett I spoke with at the time. He was an assistant commissioner In those days. He said no team is permitted to cease a game by walking off the floor, and that we were being reprimanded by the KHSAA, which was basically a warning to not allow that to happen again. He also reprimanded the coach for leaving the bench to check on the player who was still laying on the floor and having a few heated words with the refs on his way to the end zone.

 

Nowadays Julian is the Commissioner, and unless he's soften his interpretations of the rules, or unless the rules have changed, Magoffin will probably be receiving a phone call and a letter from the KHSAA.

I thought that was a typo on the scoreboard when I saw it. Not the first time I've heard of a team quitting in the middle of a game....
