I know I don't know the whole story, but if a Ref is blowing a game by blowing calls, then the coach should just have his team foul everyone out and end the game, then leave with the forfeit. This way can avoid KHSAA letters and calls. As a fan, I can't say this is right, but If I was in that coaches shoes dealing with a Ref that is full of themself, then That would be the best way to just end it if he wants to end it. Ultimately, the assistant should have just taken over like usual. Unless there was no assistant coach maybe????

I'm told that things got chippy between the Magoffin coach and one of the referees. The coach got ejected for pretty much nothing, so the entire Magoffin team, fans, etc. all just left.

 

The game was a forfeit and it was senior night at Breathitt County.

At this point, I only know what I've been told by Magoffin County folks. I'm not going to form any opinions until I hear the other side too. I do know that a Breathitt County official took the Magoffin coach's side. Hopefully some eye witnesses will post on here and give their take.

How much could have actually happened so early in the game to infuriate the coach enough to pull his team off the court??? I mean, the score was 9-0, so obviously the game didn't have many minutes off the clock.

 

I talked to someone this morning and they knew a little bit about what happened. The ref who called the technical and then the second technical has been an official for over 40 years. I know him personally and he is as mild mannered and easy going as anyone you'd ever meet. He rarely calls technicals, and it takes something over the top for him to stick a coach with a T. The person I was discussing it with said the Magoffin coach was in the refs ears and complaining in most of the games he had seen, so it didn't surprise him that the ref was trying to send a message early to get control of the game.

There's probably more to the story and each side no doubt will have their own angle on the situation. But it was commented on here that the technical was called for no reason. I know personally the ref that called it had to have a good reason. He's been around officiating a LONG time, called state tournaments, and has experience. He doesn't make a severe call like that for no reason. Heck, there's big repercussions on the coach for getting two technicals and being tossed. I suppose a two game suspension. No ref would want that to happen this late in the season and tournaments just around the corner.

 

The KHSAA will probably want to see the film ASAP. That will explain some of the story I suppose.

Are these two team heated rivals? How many fouls was called so far into the game? Any altercations, even though score was 9-0? Quite as crickets by both teams, so too many questions, no answers yet, but still early I suppose.

You seem to be placing all the blame on the officials when not much is known at this time. Maybe the official wasn't at fault. Maybe the coach said or did something that left him no other alternative but to call techinicals. Coaches should hold to a higher standard too.

 

The film will tell some of what happened, but not everything. The KHSAA will request reports from both sides. I do know if it was the ref that I heard call the T's that he is not one to make a knee-jerk decision like that. He's been an official since the early 1970's and has been in many big games in the region and at the state tournament. He knows well about "accountability" and "standards. This is strictly an opinon of mine but the coach had to do something fairly overboard for him to be tossed by this guy.

When that ref was overlooking some apparent calls (this from both sides), the coach asked him to make a call on the baseline. The ref immediately blew the whistle and gave him a technical foul.

 

After that, one source says the coach asked "what did I do" and was immediately given another technical foul. Another source says the coach was riding the refs pretty hard and said "that's the best call you've made all night" after the first technical foul. So there are conflicting details on that part of the story.

 

What I do know for sure according to multiple sources is that the players' parents told their kids to quit playing and leave the court. The coach had nothing to do with that. I have talked to 7 people now and that is what I have so far.

An old college roommate from Knott County told me that there was one overarching rule in mountain basketball.

That would be enough for me to pull my kid from the court. Listening to posters concerning themselves with school finances over player safety is disappointing.
