Very swift reaction by the police department.

 

The police officer has been arrested for assault and the police chief intends to fire him. The FBI is also investigating the incident. Sounds like the guy couldn't understand what the officers were saying to him so rather and take the time to figure it out the guy just slammed him on the ground. His tone changes quite a bit once he realizes the man can't walk. Here's a link that contains the video:

Looked excessive to me based on what I saw. End result of the officer being charged and fired seems like the right call based on what I've seen.

Another video shows the police vehicle responding to the non-emergency call and driving up to Patel. The two police officials then accost him and ask him what he's doing to which he replies "India". One of the police officials also asks him if he's looking at houses in the area.

 

"Where are you headed? I can't understand what you're saying sir," an official is heard saying. The official is also asked for some identification documents and where he stays. However, things rapidly go downhill from there with the police official getting upset over Patel constantly turning away from him.

 

"Do not turn away from me again...if you turn away again I will put you to the ground...Do not jerk away from me again," the police official is heard warning Patel.

 

When Patel refuses to respond to their queries, a police official is heard saying,"Do not turn away from me one more time. Relax..."

 

The police official, later identified as officer Parker, knocks Patel violently to the ground and asks him to "chill out".

 

As another police official arrives, Parker is heard saying,"I don't what his problem is but he wouldn't listen. He just kept trying to walk away."

Says that a fund has been set up to raise money for his mounting medical bills. That's nice. But in my opinion, this gentleman should have zero medical bills. Every dime should be paid for by the city.

We have a few Indian families in our neighborhood. Each home has the 3 generation thing, with the older parents living with the adult children. They do like to stroll. You see them out walking every day when the weather is warmer. Not fast, just strolling and looking around. I imagine that is what this man was doing.

My daughter lives in Madison...I guess I will have to take extra caution when walking around her house!

I wonder why the man kept turning away from the policeman? If I am in a foreign country -as I often am- and a policeman tells me something, and I don't understand it, I am just going to face him and keep my hands raised until we come to an understanding. I wouldn't turn and walk away.

 

It appears the policeman basically tossed him on his head...lucky he didn't kill him, and this was excessive. However, when will people get the clue to respect the police and things usually go better.????????????

I agree with this. And you never know how it's portrayed in the paper or on the news. It's all about the wow factor. And a video would explain if the actions of the man warranted his treatment. Something ain't kosher with the whole story like HT said.

 

I agree with the "wow factor". I usually take the "innocent until proven guilty" approach, but with the department not coming out to defend the officer, and to also issue a "get well" seems like the officer "may" have done something against policy.

 

Fact is, not all cops are doing the right thing, and some are bigots, just as some are on the take. Just like any other group in this world, you have a small percentage of bad people mixed in with an overwhelming number of good people.

Having watched the video the department made a good call. I like the swift and fair action by this department and that they didn't attempt to make excuses or sugarcoat it.

Or maybe the officers could use good judgement and not bodyslam someone that couldn't speak English and wasn't presenting any threat to anyone. This happened not because the victim was a threat to the officers, it happenedbecause they lost patience. This one is on the officer. The victim obviously couldn't understand what was going on.
