February 2, 201511 yr Just saw that Muhammad Ali is in the hospital and got me to thinking that it was time for a good boxing discussion. So who is the overall GOAT in boxing?
February 2, 201511 yr Author I think the level of competition that Ali faced gives him the edge over most others.
February 2, 201511 yr I think the level of competition that Ali faced gives him the edge over most others. Difficult to argue with that. I forget his name but there was the old sportswriter during the time Joe Louis held the title that named the parade of lesser fighters Joe Louis had bouts with the "Bum of the Month Club". I think it was a charge leveled at Marciano for a time as well. As a Louisvillian it's just about equivalent to renouncing your name to answer this question with any name apart from Cassius Clay... but I think we'd be remiss if we didn't talk about Sugar Ray Robinson as well. 85-0 as an amateur. Over 170 wins as a professional including a 91-match unbeaten streak during his prime. Five-time world champ spanning both the welterweight and middleweight divisions. Just a great fighter.

I put Muhammad Ali at #1, and Sugar Ray Robinson at #1A. Pound for pound, I think Robinson was the best there ever was, but Ali would have beaten Robinson out of sheer size and strength.
February 2, 201511 yr I'm not sure. Maybe I should ask those dudes in the barbershop in "Coming To America".

February 4, 201511 yr Author Sugar Ray Leonard Ray always IMO gets sold short because he was a "Pretty Boy" but he was a Bad Man...the fight with Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns is awesome!
February 4, 201511 yr "He bettuh than Cassius Clay, he better than Suguh Ray....he better than..what's, what's that new boys name?!" "Mike Tyson." "Yeah, that's it...Mike Tyson. Look like a bulldog." "His momma call'im Clay...I'mma call him Clay." Anybody want to start a thread where we just recite this movie from the beginning?! But, yes...The Greatest is The Greatest. However, I would have liked to see him in his prime vs. Tyson 87-88....just to see. It'd probably been a little something like my daddy told me my freshman year at college. I was starting to bulk up....off season was paying off, and he just randomly told me once: "I just want to let you know, that if you ever thought you could whip my tail......if you can live through the first minute, you might have a chance. But that first minute is going to be hell." bahaha ...probably would have gone something like that (Me-Tyson)...Dad (Ali).

February 6, 201511 yr Ray always IMO gets sold short because he was a "Pretty Boy" but he was a Bad Man...the fight with Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns is awesome! I enjoyed watching Leonard fight in his prime more than any boxer I have ever seen. Fastest hands ever.
