Yes, CovCath's coaches are out coaching the NewCath & the other teams in NKY.

This is the 4th season for Ruthsatz & company.

Every year they have exceeded the preseason projections & polls.

CCH coaches game plans are excellent, they find the opposing teams strengths, then they take it from them.

They coach their players up, instill confidence in them. Just look at what they've done with payers like Pauley, Tobler, Schult, B.Heppler, Keller, Romes, Theobald.... they find out what strengths a player has , then they use it to their advantage as a team.

 

Not buying the tradition thing either.

Ruthsatz is the new CCH tradition...hard nosed defense, leave it all on the court or you'll be on the bench, next man up, roll players, no I in team.

 

CovCath has had good to great high school talent over the years but have never won as consistently in the last 40 years as they are now.

They are becoming known in the state as a contender not a pretender.

 

Ruthsatz & company are the best in the state, IMHO.

 

Excellent post. There has been more talent and talented teams in the past. Not many but it's true. No offense to Coach T and Coach Listerman, both great people and great coaches.

Ruthsatz is no doubt the main ingredient that gave the Colonel's program the boost that it needed to become the program that it is.

 

When I suggested tradition and spirit as part of the ingredients I said that Ruthsatz was a great fit for CovCath because of their already established winner's mentality. Adding him to the mix is what dotted their "i's" and crossed their "t's"

 

Upon entering he had kids at CovCath ready and willing to listen and easily buy into his plan, made easier to promote by the tradition with which they were raised.

 

I've no doubt that he'd have success wherever he'd coach. How quickly of a big turnaround he'd have still would depend a whole lot on what's he's initially given and what he has to start with.

 

What he was given when entering CovCath was a school already deeply established in spirit and tradition.

So I ask again, did Covington Catholic out-coach Newport Central Catholic?

 

I believe they out played NCC but NCC also played bad I think CovCath is a great team behind their standout sophomore.

IMO, the answer is probably yes. I wasn't at this game specifically, but it appears the game plan worked to perfection. That said, Coach R is "out coaching" just about every coach in the state. This is not to say that Coach Dawn is not a really good coach, I believe he is very good. He has proven his status as a coach over a long lasting multitude of years. IMO, Coach R is doing more with less. NCC has 2 D1 caliber players on their team, with Pangallo who is a high quality D2, and a host of really solid kids after that.

 

No one would have called CCH a state title contender to start the season last year. Yes, Nick R. is really good, but around him were what most would call role players. Coach R gets these guys to buy in. Not buy in to hype, or rankings, but to his system, whatever it may be based on the talent that he has. This year, people again struggled to determine how good CCH could be with a host of seniors, including Nick R., gone. Once again, CCH is beating really good teams with a Sophomore as their leader, granted wise beyond his years in the game, but a sophomore nonetheless, and a bunch of role players like Romes, Theobald, Shumate, etc. Schuh is an anomaly IMO, he is probably more than a role player, but many people still struggle to really categorize him. He does the dirty job things really well, and can score at times.

The bottom line is, Coach R. Is getting all these guys to believe and play.

 

So, while I won't say that NCC was "out coached" during the game, which I didn't see, with certainty, I would say that the game plan for CCH appears to have worked to perfection. I have also seen this too many times over the past few years to not give Coach R the benefit of the doubt. His in game adjustments are some of the best I've seen in a long time. He isn't afraid to go away from something that his team always does, if it isn't working. And, he has the boys reading and willing to play a variety of styles and paces. That said, yes, kids have to perform, but when your coach puts you in the exact right position time and again, your going to win far more often than not (while everyone happens to lose a few games during a long season).

 

Hope these teams matchup again. This time, I won't miss it :popcorn:

As far as out coached...I don't have an answer because these are two of the best. But 100% out played.

Yes, 3-5 but the trend is changing....

2011-12 : 0-2

2012-13 : 1-2

2013-14 : 2-1

2014-15 : ??? time will tell.

I think both staffs are excellent. Ruthsatz/Joe Frederick and Ronny Dawn/Jimmy Pangallo might be the 2 best Twosomes in the State. Lets just leave it at that and let the players do the talking.

 

In this game the CovCath players outplayed the NCC kids. It may be different in their next meeting if it happens.

I believe Ncc will do some things differently and win a rematch if they meet in the regionals tourney.

Why didn't they do it the other night? I do think NCC was out coached this game. Dawn does a great job but he has had a load of talent the past couple of years. He has outclassed the All A state tourney with this talent, but can't get out of the region. How many of his players have gone onto the next level recently? My guess is more than any other school around. This should equate to winning the big ones?
