I can remember dropping my daughter off at a friend's house her freshman year in high school and saw one of the parents on the porch. Naturally, I parked the car and went up to meet the dad. Super nice guy, police officer in Newport...said he had never in his life had a parent come up to meet him and talk to him while dropping a kid off at his house. I just can't understand that.

 

Cat, I have 5th and 6th graders (as well as older ones) show up to play basketball for me at the beginning of a season all the time, and it's common for them to just pop in the gym and for me to have no idea who they or their parents are, never introduce themselves, talk to me, etc. Heck, I've gone a whole season and had parents not say 5 words to me.

As it should be.

 

However, if your daughter does something wrong or stupid, or God-forbid, illegal, is it your fault, or do you make her take responsibility for her actions?

 

She would be held accountable but I would certainly feel my share of failure and disgust. And if an 18-year old kid ever ran off with my daughter, he could imagine his future being like a scene out of Taken.

I never said she should be absolved of all wrong-doing. I said she is a child and is not capable of making adult decisions.

One of my daughters friends has spent the night at our house at least 8 times and we have yet to meet the parents. My daughter has never spent the night there because I haven't met the parents.

And there are certain houses, my kids will never spend the night at. Their kids are welcome at my house, but no way they are going to their house.

With all due respect UKMustang, my daughter, who is now 27 and doing brilliantly, made some, shall I say, crazy decisions at one time. I could write a book on what I had to deal with and tell stories that you would say couldn't possibly be true. Our daughter was raised in a home with unquestioned love and support throughout the family. However, when a young girl encounters a "predator", a family's world can quickly be turned upside down. Young girls are called a "minor" for a reason. They, sometimes, are not capable of making logical or rational decisions. That's why those who are 18+ are "supposed" to stay away. A co-dependent person and a predator attract like magnets. The co dependent cannot get away from the predator for a variety of reasons, far to lengthy to go into here. In my case, once I became fully away of the situation, I handled it quickly and decisively. It wasn't popular at the time and my daughter hated me, now she says if it weren't for my actions, she could have "never" got out of the situation. All I know is it was a living nightmare and I pray UKMustang that you never have to encounter anything like it. Best wishes.

Can't always judge a book by it's cover...but in this case I'm going to. One look at the mom's picture before I played the video, and I think it's pretty easy to see...meth, crack, pills, maybe all the above...something, you can just see it on her. Then finding out the fact that she lost custody 10 years ago? Yep, no mother of the year candidate here and I guarantee the mother had been "messed up" for a while, and if not now definitely in the past. Dad? Who the heck knows.:idunno: Didn't see a thing mentioned about him in the story.

 

Little wonder in this case why this little girl is in the situation she is.

I disagree 100% with this. Her parents have plenty of blame. But a 13 year old most certainly knows it's wrong to steal not 1, not 2, but 3 different trucks and a gun. No way you're telling me a 13 year old doesn't know what she's doing.
