From NationalHSfootball.com: Louisville Trinity takes a step back in scheduling

I tried to tell all the Dixie people that during the season and they just got mad at me.

They were a team of destiny, unlike any other 6A team out of Northern Kentucky.

I really don't want to downgrade Dixie, they had a fine ball club and they had a group of men on their team but if you want to win big school football titles generally speaking you have to be balanced on offense.

And I shouldn't either, they had very good players on the field and they played very hard but I really believe that their coaching staff did the players a HUGE disservice making them so 1 dimensional. As I said in another post just after the championship game, Dixie probably had the athletes to have a good passing game but it was obvious they weren't taught and never worked on passing the ball in game situations.

One thing Trinity's schedule did do for them is show the coaches weaknesses and areas that needed improvement as well as places where personnel needed to be changed. You don't get that by scheduling a bunch of cupcakes and rolling over everyone. Luckily for Trinity X will always be on the schedule and at least for the next 2 years Male is back. Ballard should also be a good test to get ready for the playoffs. Even though the schedule over all isn't as daunting there are still plenty of opportunities for Trinity to be tested.

But would Dixie Heights have gained anything last year by being challenged in the regular season? It was obvious in the state game that even though they had a QB who could throw the ball they had no passing game whatsoever and when Trinity stifled the running game they were done. Had they been tested a little in the regular season they may have seen just how bad their pass game was and maybe done something to correct it. Would they have won the game, probably not, but when they got behind they wouldn't have looked totally inept either.

Dixie was too one dimensional they did try and pass in some games but just wasn't there most of the time. I don't think a tougher schedule would have done anything but maybe demoralize them.

I'm not trying to upset anyone, but I believe the point is that if you schedule opponents who are good enough to beat you when you are merely one dimensional, then you get tired of losing and take the steps to become two dimensional, so that when you play a very tough opponent in the playoffs, one who can shut you down as a one dimensional team, you are prepared to compete to win. Again, not trying to get on Dixie Heights or any specific team.

Exactly. They didn't have success with the pass, but didn't need it thanks to a weaker schedule. Losing a game because they lacked the pass would have forced them to become two dimensional if they wanted to compete on the state title level. They were certainly capable of it, just look at some of their attempts and what he did against the Trinity second string. If they had actually put emphasis on the pass and learned how to use it in a serious game they would have done better.

Trinity lost half their games in the regular season and I hardly saw them 'demoralized'. All it did was make them correct their weaknesses and get hungry for a win.

Perhaps their most impressive quality. Hard to argue against coaching that can handle that.

Good point.

But what happens when the other team has more D1 offers and a strong core? Like Male, for instance. Would you say that they are populated with scrubs outside of the D1 offers? Yet, after playing a harder schedule Trinity beat them in their second meeting.

Yes, talent is important, but there is still more to the game than that. If talent was all it took to decide the winner then you would never see upsets, which is obviously not the case. Who did you predict to win the Grave Co/Bowling Green game?

then why did Male

lose? They played a tough schedule. They played Trinity. Why did t they win it all?

This game could have gone either way, much like the regular season game. Had the Rocks not played the schedule they did Male's talent would have likely been overwhelming the second time around. Much like in 2013.

Yes, but who played the tougher schedule? Male was only truly tested in three games: Manual, St. X and Trinity. Four games if you want to count Meade County. All their other games were won by an average difference of 38 points with the smallest difference being 21 points. I'm not saying they played cupcakes, but obviously those games were not at the level of Male and Trinity.

Trinity on the other hand played teams that were all on their level. They were tested every week. Their biggest win was by eleven points and their biggest loss was by fourteen. Typically, win or lose the point difference was in the single digits. And if scores aren't enough to prove it, consider the recognition most of the teams Trinity played. Carmel and Indy Cathedral were ranked 2 and 6 respectively in Indiana. Ensworth was 3 in TN. Moeller was 4 in OH. The strongest teams Male played outside of the super district were Meade and Ballard, 8 and 18 respectively in KY.

And Peprocks is right, that game could have gone either way, but the constant test is what just the Rocks that tiny edge against a more talented team.

Male's schedule wasn't even close to Trinity's schedule, compare the two, Trinity's schedule gave them the tiniest of edges to finally defeat Male, I honestly believe that. We certainly can agree to disagree & I' m fine with that, it's all good.

Not true at all. I'm not talking about games where you have a running clock everytime. I go back to 2012 when there were some people claiming Cooper didn't win state simply because they didn't play Highlands to prepare themselves. Bowling Green would have been the favorite and would have won 99% of the time that year no matter who Cooper played that season.

Cooper still got to the state championship without playing the St Louis Rams. As long as you aren't having a running clock most of the time you will be just fine.

Are you telling me that last year if Trinity played teams like Lafayette etc. they would have lost state? Really?

That is such a myth. If you are a good team and have good coaches, you won't lose to a Boone Co. in the state finals because you didn't play Ensworth that season.

I really hate to break this to some Trinity folks as well as Highlands folks. Kids who weren't very good in pee wee don't all of a sudden become great in High School, it actually does have more to do than anything else with the fact that these schools happen to get many of the best players in the area to go there and play, that my friends has more to do with winning than anything else. Oh Big Secret exposed Lol!

Come on HB, don't beat around the bush, just come out and say it like you always do . There are other uninformed people like you that think the same thing. H and T also get the good players from Cincinnati. :lol2:

Its no secret that when a family has the resources they have the opportunity to choose where to send their kids. It's the families decision.

If you have 3 schools in the same area and one excels at athletics and you have a chance to send your son who plays football to any of the 3 you would probably choose the one that has a winning tradition as well as good academics.

put it this way. If it was a level playing field I would actually think that scheduling actually played as big of a part as some want us to think. The fact that it isn't a level playing field across the state makes me dismiss the "it's all hard work and scheduling" that makes some schools good.

Nobody here has said 'it's all hard work and scheduling', I even made the point that strength of schedule doesn't even crack the top five factors. Yet, it does make a difference, which everyone has provided ample proof of. You continue to act like it's a non-factor without refuting anything. Trinity played a stronger schedule than Male, Male edged them out in talent but Trinity came back to beat them. If schedule is a non-factor then provide an alternate explanation.
