PRP is ranked where they are because they started the season at #15 and managed to win games when others were losing. Pretty simple process. When teams ahead of you in the rankings lose then they fall behind you while you move up. No reason to punish them for something that hasn't happened. Their worst loss is a 1 point loss to Doss that happened in the first game of the season. I'm confused as to how PRP should be lower based on their results thus far in the season. We'll see what they are made of in the LIT and go from there.

 

I saw PRP play twice last year. Bryan Station gave them all they wanted and then some once. Bardstown beat them in Rupp, albeight when PRP was playing without one of their top players. Regardless, I thought they were a good team last year because winning the 6th alone is tough enough in itself. That said, they lost a TON of talent. Lamontray Harris, Deangelo Hunter, and Antonio McDaniels were all top 10-15 type talents in the region and probably made up around 70-80% of their scoring if I were guessing.

 

Dale Mabrey is one of, if not THE, best coach in the State, and that's without question. Past him, a school that usually has some talent, and their past reputation, I don't really know what jumps out about them as the #8 team in the State. I get your point about teams ahead of them losing, but at the same time, I disagree that they should have started the year at #15, they lost too much from last year and without looking it up, I'm going to bet that half of the people couldn't tell you who more than maybe 1 of their starters is or the name of their leading scorer.

 

I guess we'll see this week, but I'm just not sold on them being at #8 right now and was really surprised that they were there. Same goes for Covington Catholic at #12.

 

Head-to-head and on a neutral court, I'd take Trinity, Ballard, Newport Central Catholic, Henderson County, Hopkinsville, Doss, Knott County Central, Manual, Taylor County, Owensboro, and Southwestern over them.

 

That's not even getting into a load of teams like your Boyle County, Lexington Catholic, Lexington Christian Academy, a Holmes that is now adjusted to their new coach, Mason County and the like who would probably be a toss-up on any given night. Past that, there are some others like Bryan Station with the addition of Carson or even now healthy Johnson Central and there are just too many teams that I see being capable of beating them for me to think "top 10-12, no question".

 

I've heard too many people whose opinions of the game I really respect coming away from the Traditional Bank Classic unimpressed with Covington Catholic. Maybe they had a bad weekend while they were down there, but I think people see a really well coached team (because Ruthsatz is obviously great) and overlooks that don't have that "takeover" player or a ton really deep pool of talent and athleticism. Looking at Covington Catholic's record, it seems like they are the KHSAA equivalent to the Houston Texans-- they don't get blown out, but they are definitely beatable. Again, Ruthsatz is great and they are very, very well-coached, so they'll most likely develop as the year goes, but right now, I think they are a little too high.

Covington Catholic went 3-1 in the Traditional Bank Tournament. They lost to Boyle County, and they defeated Perry County Central, Central and Henry Clay. The same Central that defeated Manual. The same Henry Clay who is ranked #6 in the tough as nails 11th region and the same Perry County Central who was good enough to defeat Taylor County. It's not like they played Betsy Layne and Casey County to advance to the semifinals of the tournament. CovCath has proven to be legit enough to be ranked where they are.

 

I'll also add that from spots 8-20 in the rankings you can pretty much draw the names out of a hat and place a number next to them and validate that number. There's so much parity in the season this year. Is CovCath being at 12 or 19 that big of a difference? I say no. At the same time, I like CovCath at 12 a lot.

I haven't seen anyone play this year. Been too busy going to middle school games. I will know more about each. I will say that Ruthsatz always does a great job of taking away a team's strength. Last year they denied Pangallo the ball the full length of the court. As a result, they had trouble getting in to their 1/2 court set. I am more interested in seeing that chess game play out.

I've seen CovCath play and followed NCC as close as one can from an hour and a half away. I expect NCC to win by about 10 but at the same time I don't think CovCath is a slouch by any means. I just think and feel like NCC is one of the top 5 teams in the state and will have too much for CovCath. Every team that CovCath has lost to has been a team that is ranked higher than them.
