I know that a lot of deputies supported Kidwell in the election only because they wanted to keep their jobs and weren't sure who would win. I hope that doesn't come back to bite them in the rear.

It's an unusual move, but I like it, assuming the current employees are "re hired" once they complete the application.

 

Stupid question here. Will the "re-hired" staff be required to start at the entry level salaries?

One wonders if they had NOT shown support and Kidwell had won, would they still be with the department?

Common practice for new sheriffs from what I have witnessed over the years.

 

Local New Sheriff had all Sworn personnel fill out an application and the interviewed them all. Sent them a letter welcoming them to be a part of his new administration. (2 were not rehired for whatever reason but all others in the department were retained)

 

Not a waste of time as some have said as the interview gives the new sheriff a chance to talk one on one with his future employees, many of them for the first time. He explains his expectations and can answer any questions that they may have in a one on one setting.

They can do that, but rarely do. I've never heard of it across an entire dept but I have seen individuals not have the same rank and pay with the new sheriff as they did the last one.

What stinks is that this is an issue, Deputies should be tenured in Kentucky the way they are in some other states. They can be fired for Cause but not just because the Sheriff changes or they supported the other guy.

 

Sheriff's are against tenure for their departments as they think it keeps their employees and their families loyal come election time.

Did they bring in these guys to do the interviews?

My first reaction is that I like it. If you have been a solid hard working employee with a good reputation, there should be no issue.

 

However, my experience with Kentucky in general is that everyone is related to someone, and there are some serious family dynasties.

 

That fact has a double edged sword. The right sheriff will clear out the dead weight and slackers that might be there because of who they are related to, making room for new hard working blood. The wrong sheriff will clear out the good hard working employees to make room for his people/relatives/friends.

People can vote them out when ever they want.

I prefer a roll of the dice, like at Turfway when two people try to claim the same horse.

 

It's bad enough people spend money to win elections, but to win a law enforcement election, some with no prior experience/qualifications, is ridiculous. Yet, they win on name recognition which means more here in Stepford than what you actually stand for. Aww, he's a good guy. I know him from the club. I'm voting for him.

Was unaware that a Sheriff is responsible for his Deputies but a Police Chief is not for his officers.

Mixed feelings.

 

Law enforcement agencies have a tendency to single some of their own out unjustly.

 

….and vice versa at times. Would you agree ?
