I think the CCTV footage is more ambiguous than many are letting on.* From what I've read, people there are saying that there are 2-3 more security cameras much closer to where the shooting occurred than the one that captured the released footage, that the officer was equipped with a body camera (and either wasn't wearing it, didn't turn it on, or that there is no footage), and that the car's dash camera was either not on or the footage is not available. I have no idea how true any of that is, but it seems like a recipe for disaster in this environment.

 

*I am not alleging the officer did anything wrong, just that this video is extremely difficult to make-out.

The body camera point may be true but nothing has been released about it yet and was a rumor started by an already discredited source.

 

It may end up being true but any speculation on that is just that speculation.

-Dash Cameras in most cars only come on when the emergency equipment (Blue lights) are turned on.

 

-Officer reportedly wasn't wearing a body camera, but had been issued one. (I know locally some officers were given Body Cameras and were given some time to get used to them and they weren't mandatory until after original period) Were officers recently issued cameras? That could be why he wasn't wearing it.

 

-Closer cameras may have been pointed in other directions. (See those little bubbles in Walmart or Lowes, most are shooting at a distance for wider view than straight down...could be similar case here)

 

-If he had a gun, drew and pointed the gun then everything else is semantics and conspiracy theories.

I just scrolled through the timeline of someone from Ferguson I follow on Twitter after I saw Clyde's post because I was wondering what the protests were about.

Looks like he clearly is raising his arm/hand towards the officer as if he had a gun in the highlighted portion of the video. If there was a gun I can understand why he was shot.

If people see the video and STILL protest they're going to hurt the greater cause .

It's beginning to look like certain people want to be policed certain ways based on their versions of our laws.

 

Im really beginning to struggle with this. We really need some senior level folks from all walks of life to step up and speak out about these issues. Not race baiters not pro athletes not hollywood stars just good old fashion hard working people.

Yes they manually have to turn them on and off at each encounter. You don't think with everything going on you could forget to turn it on?

 

But in this case does it matter, seems as if surveillance video shows what happened.

Not making an excuse but if it was recently issued it may take a while for turning it on to be in their muscle memory. If you've been an officer for several years and now you have to think to turn on a camera, it's just one more thing to do. I'm sure he'll be raked over the coals for it...even though there is another video of the incident.

The city only has 3 cameras. At the start of the officers shift there was some type of confusion when the camera was handed out per the mayor. Im sorry I can't remember the exact conversation.

Dash Cams usually only work if blue/red lights are on.

He actually began firing as he was stumbling backwards. Im assuming he was suprised when the gun was drawn an his first instinct was to backup.
