High school football can damage the brain in just ONE season - No concussion needed

Featured Replies

  • Researchers studied 24 high school players between the ages of 16 and 18
  • none of the players were concussed during the season
  • Researchers found abnormalities similar to the effects of mild brain injury

Researchers have found that playing a single season of football can change the brain of a teenager - even if they don't suffer concussions.

Even though players were not concussed during the season, researchers found abnormalities similar to the effects of mild traumatic brain injury.

They called for more research into the area, which raises new questions over the safety of contact sports for young adults.

Wow!

So can drinking a lot of beer. Didn't stop me from doing either. Kids are going to play if they love the sport. What this study will do is make kids start way later. It could impact the overall quality of football.

Two thoughts:

1) Twenty-four subjects is a laughably small sample-size for any kind of published "study", regardless of the study's findings.

2) These findings hint that, yes, football players will be back to no helmets sooner than we realize.

Man how did some of us use those water helmets? I would freeze mine overnight and then wear it in practice in the summer.

The Daily Mail is the online equivalent of the National Enquirer.

No link to the study. No actual data was provided. "Researchers say...."

They put crap like this out there so they get clicked on then hopefully you click on the rest of the garbage that is piled on the page.

Yeah, so can falling out of a tree or wrecking your bike or any of the other hundreds of things that kids do to punish their bodies.

We thought those were the bomb Diggity when they came out.

How many head shots does a player take compared to bike accidents and tree accidents?

Doesn't look like the complete study has been released....the Radiological Society of North America has only presented some of their findings at their annual meeting, and they only just presented it today. The BBC, Fox News, Science Daily, and New York Magazine have all picked up the story. This isn't unfounded tabloid material.

I read the title of the thread and thought it was going to say by reading some posts on BGP

How does American football compare to rugby and Australian rules football for head injuries? Heck, even compared to countries that are big time soccer and have all the youth academies and national teams.

I have also wondered if those old suspension padded helmets were better because it is the sudden stoppage of motion that seems to cause the majority of the brain trauma?

I had 2 (documented) concussions in HS and whenever I do something my wife calls dumb she always claims to many shots to my head.
