CCH favorite for 9th region in ’06?

Featured Replies

1. CCH

1A. Holmes

The question is : who else?

I'd guess Holy Cross will be in the mix? I thought they were the 2nd best team in the 9th at the end of the year.

Holy Cross will definetly be a contender next year but i dont see them being able to compete with holmes and covcath...they will probably be in the same boat that highlands was in this year

...they will probably be in the same boat that highlands was in this year

Which boat was that?

Covington Catholic's entire season will rest on one thing: Who is going to replace

Timmy at point guard? Possibilities:

1. Brown- filled in in Tim's injury, needs to work on shot

2. Bondick- little varsity experience, probably more of a two guard

3. Bovard- complete reversal of roles, does he have the decision making?

4. Jacobs- offense would need to be oriented for a scoring pg, might be the best option though.

I think Schult will be an offensive threat next year, if you were at Rupp for the Apollo game he took it to the hole 2 or 3 times and looked confident.

Cahill, Schmerge, Roll, Grimes, and Maile are just 5 more incredibly versatile shooters that CovCath always has in the arsenal.

My predicted starting lineup? Can't do it. I think you include Jacobs, Bovard, Schult but after that I don't know. You can't even predict what position TJ and Bo will be.

My starting 5 would be...

Jacobs, Bovard, Schult, Cahill and possibly the Lampl kid.

Absolutely not. Lampl barely played on JV, and Coach L will not abandon the 3 guard offense (the beggining of this year was different because he did not believe the kids from fall sports (bovard and landrum) were ready) possibilites outside of that are Brown, Bondick, and Maile.

A short list of top teams:

1. CovCath (two words: Jacobs, Bovard. Big loss in Tierney though)

2. Holmes (no proven inside prescence)

3. Holy Cross (good shooters along with good rebounders)

4. NewCath (need to develop a ball hander to compliment Kiernan)

5. St. Henry (should be solid with Lenhof/Kuebbing)

I may have forgot a team, but that is 4 private schools in the top 5. Highlands, Dixie, Ludlow, Beechwood all lose a ton. So does CovCath, but as in the past, they don't rebuild, they reload.

For CCH, I'd run TJ at the point. Bovard has not shown me that he can make good decisions, and would be much better playing PG on a limited basis, IMO.

What about Garnick? He's small, but I wonder if he'll get an opportunity next year.

It would be a shame if a class as good as Holmes '07 only took one trip to Rupp in their career... Not saying they are or aren't the fav, just that it would be a shame...

Not a point guard. At this point, he is strictly a shooter.

Before you write off a 6'5 kid who is athletic and still developing , let me say two words:

Michael Romes.

Of course it's early but I want to see how accurate our top 10's are 8 months from now.....

Top 10 Teams

1. CovCath- Two words: TJ, Bo. Nice supporting cast of players who know their roles also.

2. Holmes- Can they pull it together? I'm sure that fballstud06 will tell us yes, it will be interesting to see. Hill should be a man as expected.

3. Holy Cross- Solid group in Scruggs, Ryan, Giwa, Sorrell, and Eifert

4. NewCath- Kiernan is a monster, and the Class of 07 was solid a few years ago, should be fun to watch with Coach Brennan.

5. St. Henry- Should win district, Lenhof is underrated, Kuebbing and Recthin are athletic inside.

6. Dixie- Lose perennial star Lawson, but should have a relatively deep team. Will Kendall be ready?

7. Ryle- Solid, physical team. Mailey is a good player, and Nelson is getting better.

8. Highlands- lose a ton, but COY Schlarman's physical style fits their big JV team. If Simpson becomes a go to guy, they will rise in the ranks quickly.

9. Boone- Always do well, not too familiar with the players other than Farris though.

10. Conner- Lose a good amount of talent, but they are ready around tourney time.

Top 10 players

1. Austin Hill- Holmes- Big, athletic, and a shooter, an offensive machine.

2. Todd Jacobs- CovCath- Great shooter who passes when he needs to. Is becoming an increasingly good rebounder also.

3. Duran Jefferson-Holmes- stock might have fell a little this year for some reason, but is still the top point guard.

4. Zach Kiernan-NewCath- The only proven inside scorer.

5. Kurt Bovard- CovCath- great shooter, defender, and athlete. Loss of Tierney means a lot more depending on him for a little bit of everything.

6. Jimmy Ryan-Holy Cross- perhaps the best shooter in the region, also has good speed to match his height.

7. Brandon Lenhof- St. Henry- very underrated, solid scorer.

8. Arrez Henderson- Holmes- can jump (of course), plays his role well.

9. Nic Simpson- Highlands- On of the most athletic players in the region, will have a new role to play.

10. ????? Scruggs, Kuebbing, Edmonson (if he is still here), or someone else. Fill it in for me.

Looks to be another incredibly guard heavy year, especially with Rice gone.

Champion could make some noise down at state, you never know.

District winners- Holmes, St. Henry, NewCath, Dixie.

35th district has the past 3 Region winners, should get a 4th this year.

At the point guard it will be interesting. At the beggining of the season, it might be Bondick and TJ both because both Bovard and Brown will (probably) still be playing football. When they return, who knows. Those 4 are the top candidates for the position.

Holmes returns a lot of very good players. I'd say those two are the top two teams in the 9th.

From what I heard from a good source, Greg Rice will re-apply to come back to Holmes.

This is news to all of us. Many of us have heard that he has enlisted at Cincinnati Taft, but I haven't heard anything in a while.

From an outsider's view, I don't know why they would accept him back. Of course he is a talent but he ruins any chemistry they have and is not worth the hassle.
