Fired football coach takes Taylor Swift's advice

Last week, Durant High School head football coach Byron Cordell was informed that his services at DHS in Durant, Oklahoma were no longer needed after 10 seasons with the school.

 

In other words, he was fired.

 

Instead of sulking in to clean out of his office, he and his family took some friendly advice from Taylor Swift, and "Shake it Off" with their own own parody video of the family packing up his belongings to the Swift song. The video quickly went viral.

 

Durant went 3-17 over the last two seasons. But Cordell holds no grudges toward the school.

 

'We just weren't successful enough in the last few years," Cordell told the Durant Democrat.

 

"We didn't win enough games. It's part of the profession. I'm disappointed, but I understand.

 

"I had a great time in my nine years here in Durant. It was an honor and privilege to coach in my home town. I would like to thank everyone for the support, not just me, but the kids in the program. I had a lot of good times."

Same here, what a great lesson for his kids and I imagine took a lot of anxiety off them. Hope the guy is also a teacher.

It sure was refreshing to not hear about: Domestic violence, shop lifting, suspensions, drug use, robberies, point shaving, and other things that defile sports. Great video and hats off to Coach and his family that showed true class!

Now that's a lesson his kids won't ever forget. Parenting kudos to him.

What an awesome way to handle the adversity. Would take this guy on my staff right now. What an amazing family. Wish them nothing but the best. Still this is a sign of how our society is a win now society. What have you done for me lately. With this video I would be willing to bet the farm this man has touched a lot of lives in his tenure there.

These were my exact thoughts. I think he could possible get a job just by people seeing this video. Just by watching the video I bet his players loved playing for him.

Very cool, good for him and his family, as one poster said, perspective is everything. IMO he wont have a hard time finding a position, to much good karma coming from that guy and his family.

Life goes on.......The ones that love you will be with you long after you get fired from that job. Sounds like you would be a great addition to another school's football team. A coach that loves his family.

 

Good thing about getting fired is you have an experience that you have learned from and will make you a better coach in the future.

Such a better man than me. He and his family still wearing the school colors/gear. I would never do that. I could learn a thing or 2 from his family I guess.

Let me be the one that asks.....

 

Does this reaction show that he wasn't fully committed to the gig ie the loss if it doesn't put him a funk? It comes across as "hey, whatever, it didn't work out."

 

Does it speak to his passion about the job?
