Basketball in KY needs to be classified...

Featured Replies

Two observations ...

1. If a public school has only 60 boys to choose from, that's their problem. They've chosen to remain that small, and it's likely that their kids don't enjoy much in the way of academic opportunities, too. In that case, their problems run deeper than simply athletics.

2. If Kentucky was to classify basketball, two classes is all that would be needed. And since we already have the All A Classic in place, I say we leave the current system intact.

How many more kids can rural public schools get? Most don't have private schools to attract kids from.

Who recognizes the All 'A' as a true State Championship? The All 'A' schools only. What would the difference be if we took A and AA schools out of the Sweet 16? One, maybe two first round games a year. District Championship should not be your realistic goal. Of course everyone's goal is a State Championship. Realistically only a handful of teams can win it. Shoot, some small NKY schools goals are to just win their Conference.

For the record, I'm completely and totally against a public/private split at any time. IMO, that's an effort issue where this is beyond that.

What makes them more deserving? They went to a larger school and had more people to pull from to field a better team. You cannot convince me that the boys on Trinity work any harder than the boys on NCC this past year. But match them up and Trinity wins. Why? They have a few more students to pull from in fielding a team.

Augusta boys work extremely hard for their basketball team. They play in leauges and AAU, they do the summer camps, and work on their own. I think there is somewhere around 50 boys in grades. Their chances against a LexCath, Mason County, or PRP is miniscule to none. Why would those 3 be more deserving?

Work would have not much to do with it. Being at a larger school would have a lot to do with it.

They would be more deserving because they are the BETTER TEAMS, regardless of the reason as long as they arent cheating.

If every hard working team in the state deserves a championship then just name every team a state champion.

You are totally correct....... there is no such thing as ChampioNS except district and region champions. STATE ChampioN should be a singular title IMO.

I consider Trinity the KY HS CLASS 4A Football Champion

I consider Lex Cath the KY HS CLASS 3A Football Champion

etc etc etc

Like I said..... I would love to see a KY HS Football Champion crowned.

I will consider who ever wins the Sweet 16 "the" KY HS Boys Basketball State Champion.

Sure a class system is neccessary in football, and MAYBE in basketball. Either way I still think you would need to pair those teams up and have ONE CHAMPION, just like in college and pro sports.

In that case you would have a district champion, region champion, class champion, and 1 state champion.

Thank you for the clarification and you did it very nicely. Good points.:thumb:

On the bolded.....

Who would recognize a Small School State Champion...... only the small schools.

You would have the big schools saying that they arent real champions because they didnt compete against the BEST TEAMS.

First of all, OUR governing body of high school athletics would recognize them. Second, not many people say that about A and AA state championships in football. They are held in ALMOST as high as regard as the big school champs.

There are 13,000 TOTAL people in our county. 2,000 kids in the ENTIRE DISTRICT Preschool through 12th grade. How are we supposed to magicly get bigger? There are HS's that are larger than our entire county ALL grade levels.

And I would counter that most of the smaller districts do real well academically according to the KY State department. Better than most of the larger schools. So if you want to compare this academically, it is the LARGER schools that have academic issues. There are some larger schools that are wonderful academically, but comparing small vs. large, Small is going to do much, much better academically.

The All A is not a KHSAA state tournament. It is a tournament, actually two tournaments (one at regional level and one at state level), just like Lex Cath's tournament or the one in Louisville. LC and whomever runs their tournaments invite who they wish. The All A invites only A level teams to their tournament.

Actually, that's not what it's about. My point was that you can't say you are ok with a class system in football but don't understand why we need one for basketball. To add to that, on one hand you say you wouldn't want a "diluted" state championship yet on the other hand you complained about getting cheated out of one. Which is it? It's either important or not. So, pick your poison...you're either being hypocritical or don't understand.

First off me saying that I didnt want a diluted state championship was a statement made "in theory". I said that I would rather have 1 champion over a diluted state champion, but that isnt the case.

Just because I think that the footall state championship is somewhat dilluted because you have 4 state champions instead of 1 doesnt mean that I cant want my team to win one.

I can think that there needs to be 1 state champion crowned and still want my team to win 1 of 4 state championships and still be consistent. These to desires are not incongruent.

That is neither hypocritical or lack of understanding.

To say that, because I think the state championship is somewhat diluted that I should not care at all how my team performs in quest for that title, is ridiculous.

First of all, OUR governing body of high school athletics would recognize them. Second, not many people say that about A and AA state championships in football. They are held in ALMOST as high as regard as the big school champs.

And "OUR governing body of HS athletics" is the cream of the crop isnt it.

They are ALMOST held in as high regard...... but not quite.

Not to mention there is a very large gap between your ALL A champion, or whoever would win the small school championship, and your Sweet 16 champion, or whoever would win the big school championship.

Whereas there isnt as big a gap, although a considerable gap, between lets say your 1A football champion and your 4A football champion. There is almost no gap between your 2A football champion and your 3A football champion, and only a small gap between your 3A and 4A football champions.

This is why you would have this attitude of the Small School champion not being a "real champion" whereass in football you dont have this attitude as much. I mean look at the example you gave of the All A classic. Sure the KHSAA would recognize the Small School Tourney winner as champion, but that would be about it.

Sure its tough for small schools to compete in basketball and public schools to compete in football, but that is why it is so special when one of these schools can make it all the way and win it all.

^Your quote. The lack of understanding comes in because unfortunately small schools are not winning state championships and/or competing for one regularly. On top of that basketball comes out A LOT better than baseball. It goes farther than just basketball.

The thought that it's ok for kids to compete against all schools for all state championships but one, is hypocrisy...no matter how you slice it.

Here are the baseball winners. Looks like pretty much large schools (3A and 4A) and private schools dominate this list.

1990 - Paintsville

1991 - Franklin-Simpson

1992 - Lafayette

1993 - Harrison County

1994 - Pleasure Ridge Park

1995 - Pleasure Ridge Park

1996 - Pleasure Ridge Park

1997 - Harrison County

1998 - Harrison County

1999 - Lexington Catholic

2000 - Henderson County

2001 - Boyd County

2002 - Covington Catholic

2003 - Paul Dunbar

And "OUR governing body of HS athletics" is the cream of the crop isnt it.

ALMOST...... but not quite.

What's the relevance?(in bold)

It's what we've got and what we have to work with.

I for one hope they dont classify basketball. Its very exciting the way it is. No matter how big schools are or how small the players still have to perform to their best or they lose. Look at the NCAA tourney. It looks like some small schools are beating some big schools. I say leave it alone

Just thought of this. Look at this year and tell me what the Sweet Sixteen would look like if you took out all of the A or AA schools?

I dont think so my friend. It seems more hypocritical to me to call oneself "STATE" champion when one didnt have to compete against everyone in the state to get that title.

Call yourself State Class X champion all you want (like in football), but to say that you are "STATE" Champion...... no.

I will even concede to you and say...... sure, lets classify basketball into 2 classes. Lets have a district, region, and small/big school champion. I still think you would need to do just like I think they should in football and pair those teams up and crown a "STATE" Champion.

What will the small schools do then...... cry because they cant win the "STATE" Championship.
