I haven't chimed in on these conversations, but my view is when they show up for preseason meetings and physical, they know what they are signing up for. It's usually the same teams every year. I suggest if they don't want to play in those games, maybe they just shouldn't play at all.

In their defense, I think they want to play with their friends, they want to be part of the team, they want the camaraderie. They play for the friendships and the chance of being part of the team that helps build the program. But, after going 0-10, they are ready to move on and prepare for the next season or for life after graduation.

Seriously, money is your rub? I do not see the athletic boosters at BW calling an emergency fiscal meeting any time soon to discuss the loss at a gate, if there was one. Some of the costs you mentioned would have to be incurred no matter who the opponent was. My point was made regarding the players completing something together and the hope of a community trying not to lose a program. Maybe they could not afford to bring cheerleaders but who really cares. Maybe they were away at a competition just like BW's band does and misses some home games. Some get what I was saying, some don't. Oh well.

I'm sure this budget is quite tight and I'm sure that they (and other schools) can not afford to lose money on any game. When you can't even cover the cost of the game from the gate, how are they supposed pay for things like equipment, medical supplies, athletic trainer, etc?

Let us think for a second. Why do we do a realignment every four years? Possibly because the players, coaches, and fans of the unsuccessful schools and programs complain and some complain because it is because of the district or region they are in that contributes to their lack of success. If the program isn't doing well, less gate money equals loss of money. So what do they do to fix the loss of money? Realign the schools.

 

This is something to throw out there for discussion. I don't think the district they are in or region they are in is the reason for lack of success. Just a thought.

So instead of 14 players they may end up with 5?

 

The players, players not parents, should possibly decide if they just want to play a few seasons as a JV team or a varsity team and not participate in the playoffs , until they see they can't come close to competing or they see that they should step back up.

 

Also, some keep mentioning "the experience", that has been said for years and I think someone even went back to the records and it showed that there was basically no improvement with most of these teams.

And as far as money for these first round games, the financial situation at many schools is not great at all, and to host a playoff game where only a few fans attend is cutting it close and the school could lose money. Not all schools are in good financial shape like Beechwood may be.

I have witnessed these situations and had players tell me the stories of the opposing team telling them these things. Let Little Ram weigh in and tell you what opposing/winless teams have told him.

That is a mixture of four different teams--JUST IN THE FIRST ROUND OF PLAYOFFS. Not to mention the regular season and second round.

Trust us no one from those teams want to make the 3 hour drive to waste their time

I am sure this is all true. I would guess you find this on about 75 football teams. Here is my problem. Why do you want to cater to these "players"? They have this attitude all season. They say these same things in about half their regular season games. That is why those teams end up being #4 seeds. But I guarantee you there are players on those teams that want to play, that work hard, that give their best effort and do everything they can to be the best they can be. They are probably as disgusted with those players you want to cater to more than anyone. And you want to deny those kids a playoff experience because of the losers. Why do you want the losers to get what they want and the hard workers to be denied one more game? Or is it you are using these players to get what you want?

This happens year in and year out. You'd think if they wanted to win and become part of a winning team, they'd transfer. I can see where most can't because of financial situations, but I have spoken to some of the kids that were the better player of their team and they'll tell you "I saw it coming." Even they know they're going to lose. It's pathetic. The kids don't want to play a game where they're going to get stomped, drive four hours in the cold, the four hours back. Why the heck do you like those games??? What's in it for you???

 

It's not even about the experience anymore, considering the playoffs are no longer for the "elite" teams because everyone makes it. It's pathetic.

The young men at Bracken County had an opportunity to learn on Friday and while it may not have been an enjoyable experience it was a learning experience.

 

Then a heartfelt thank you for the kind people of Ft. Mitchell for teaching the young polar bears some great life lessons. It is unforunate that it took game 11 for them to figure it out. 10 weeks of beatings including lopsided losses to Brossart and Eminence (who beat no one other than Bracken County) just didn't do the trick; however, thanks to this wonderful playoff stucture Bracken County was able to figure out everything they didn't learn during the regular season. Perhaps we should go double elmination to give them one more teachable moment.

I fully understand that many of the games are bad. I also recognize that there were some good games in round 1 and there were teams that really wanted to play even though they struggled all year. I guarantee you that 0-10 Somerset wanted to play that round 1 game more than any team in the state. They were competitive in the game and only lost by 10 points. There were good competitive games in round 1 and there were upsets.

 

The difference between me and you is I don't want to cater to the players who don't want to be there. I want every team and player possible to have the opportunity to achieve something more. If it means half the players on many teams who don't care must play one more game, tough beans boys. Why are you playing in the first place? If you don't want to be there, get out of the way of those players who do. And surely don't expect me to deny the other half of the players and teams who want to be there that opportunity because of you.

 

I truly see this as the American way. Provide opportunity to everyone and then let the people decide what to do with that opportunity. Just like in real life, you have the quitters, you have those who will take the easiest path they can without quitting and you have those who challenge themselves individually to be better. I don't want to deny those who want to be better and challenge themselves an opportunity to do that.
