Typical. Change the subject to something else because you know you just got beat in your own argument. I've been on a team that went 1-9 and missed the playoffs, I've been on a team that went 4-7 and drove 3 1/2 hours to 1-seeded Belfry just to get our heads drilled, and I've been on a 1-seeded 8-3 team that got beat in the first round by a four seed. There may have been players like you were referring to on that 1-9 team I spoke of, I was a freshman and it was a dark time for LC football. But I can promise with every fiber of my being there was not one player or coach on my team that didn't want to travel to Belfry in round 1 and play that game. And the reason we all wanted to be there is simpe: the OPPORTUNITY to shock the state and win that first round game in Pond Creek. Yes, we lost. But we all grew from that EXPERIENCE. Especially me and the other fellow sophomores who went on to win the district our senior year. And then, it happened. We did win the district and we lost that first round home playoff game to a 4-seed. Unheard of, right? Especially for a team that didn't deserve to be there in the first place. Again, I can promise there wasn't one person on that 4-seeded team that didn't want to be there. So, to add to what VOR was saying, why should we take the OPPORTUNITY away from those who really and truly want it just to cater to those select few who don't?

I bet there were conversations all week about "why do we have to play this game", "why can't we just play Frankfort and Mayfield", "those are the teams that matter".

 

Anyone that thinks the Beechwood starters wanted to play this game is delusional. Now, the Beechwood players don't want to play, the Bracken County players don't want to play, why do adults want this game played?

"Sorry Johnny, I know you won but if the players on the losing teams don't have the same size trophy as you they may get upset." That is where the socialism remark came in, we want to give people things they don't deserve.

 

And opportunity? Do we have to keep letting teams play until they win? I think Sandman hit on it, heck why not let them play one more game, maybe they can win that one. They had 10 games to have opportunities.

 

It's nice to be able to guess what each player on each team wants and does not want, when people have talked to or overheard players saying they don't want to play. Plus, I'm sure many of the Bracken Co players may play basketball as well, perhaps they would rather get in the gym at this point.

I have a solution: The players on the team that is doing the blowing out don't want to play very weak teams, the players on the very weak teams don't want to play a team they know is going to beat them by 60 points, but the adults of both programs want to make sure both teams have to play. Why don't we let the adults from the two programs play? This way the adults get their way and the game goes on, and the players from neither school have to play a game that they don't want to play.

I get what your saying....but the defense or offense is playing against players they know, intensity is there...but not the same, they know each others moves....etc. The team knows what is coming... whether its JV playing the opposite team or not....reps are reps....but, meaningful ones come against other teams when the lights are on

Another thing is that I, being disabled and have to use a wheelchair / scooter to get anywhere, get extremely P'd Off when I see perfectly healthy people that are just too freakin' lazy to walk riding a scooter !!

 

As for everything else that you were trying to get across - you are absolutely right. One point of H.S. Football, or any other sport for that matter is to prepare / teach kids some life lessons. "Work hard to get better" .... "get better to accomplish a goal" ......"the better you get-the more goals you set" .....It's ALL based on hard work. Hard Work, at least when and how I grew up is a good thing and when you accomplished the goal that was set then you were rewarded and then you set higher goals......., etc., etc..

As for your "political" reference - I am not going there either other than to say -- " I think that with the leadership in our country right now, we are experiencing the results of the attitude of "everyone gets a trophy - failure is o.k. - ?Not me !! , I didn't do it" theory. No One Gets Better, No One Wins and All get pulled down ......and I Like to WIN !

I think you missed my point....its not about the parents or the coaches...the system IS WHAT IT IS...I was in attendance at this game, it was NOT A GAME...It was a glorified practice and the KIDS at least on the Beechwood side wanted to be there....They know they have to play this game, they know they have to keep getting better. If you have to play it...you may as well embrace it. I think they took a business like approach to it. They did not try to demoralize anyone, after the running clock....it was run right, run left, run up the middle.

There are players on both these teams that wanted to play. There are players on both teams questioning why play this game. The answer to that has nothing to do with this game. The answer to that is there are at least 50 other games where all the players on both teams want to play. That is why this game has to be played.
