Biggest Cinderella teams to win State Titles?

Featured Replies

Two teams that stick out to me are the '87 Shelby County and '97 Bourbon County teams.

What teams ranked out of the top ten in their class have won? I guess that would be the place to start.

At the end of the regular season? NewCath in '06 was either not in the top 10 of 1A, or sitting at like #9.

Bourbon County was 4th in their own district, I think, in '97. I can't think of any other ones.

It was more about the competition, imo, but Tilghman entering the playoffs at 4-6 in 2009 is worthy of consideration.

I agree with this

That Tilghman team had struggled mightly all year until the last game of the regular season when they completely revamped the offense to run the wildcat, which proved to be just the spark it needed to completely turn things around.

Ironically, they played horribly on offense in the title game, but a stout defense led by three interceptions from current UK starting linebacker Josh Forrest made the difference in defeating Somerset.

84 Corbin

93 Mayfield

97 Bourbon Co

09 PT

91 GRC team. They had to beat Trinity and St X back to back to win the 4A.

I don't consider them they were undefeated weren't they.

Yes they were, but diffidently not the favorite to win against Trinity or St X. Both were considered big upsets.

'13 Collins

I don't think 13 Collins as a Cinderella. Picked by some to win that game and ranked top 5 most of the year.

I think you mean the '82 Corbin team.

Bourbon County was 4th in their own district...in '97.

Common misconception. Bourbon County was third in their district in 1997, behind Boyle County and Danville, ahead of Lexington Catholic. Bourbon won at undefeated Boyle in the second round while Catholic upset Danville. Bourbon then beat Catholic and Lawrence County at home in a mudpit in back-to-back weeks to make it to the state finals.

I think you mean the '82 Corbin team.

IDK, you are likely correct as my memory begins to fade a little with age. I do know Corbin had a 500 or maybe slightly less record and won out. I think it was 82 now that you shake my memory. Beat a Scotties team that year that upset Mayfield
